Either you can really carefully snap pieces together like what you did with the rest of the structure, or you can't and you could just dismantle the pillar, place your thing, and replace the pillar. Focus on laying the new pieces up against existing pieces, since that is how the snap placement works. This is also why I usually start with the floor of a building.

I think the building needs A LOT of work. A lot of times building under something is impossible. Normally the only way I can make it work is to be BELOW the item and snap it from below. But that isn't always an option.

I hope they change this in the future where you can force toggle through the snap points or something. The only way around is probably to dig down, place, then fill the hole.

What exactly are you trying to do? Is the pillar not touching the ground so you need another under it?

Yeah, i need two pillars to reach the above floor. If i place it on the floor first, it wont snap to the floor above it. But yeah, if i cant go through the snap points manually, then this wont work. So the building even from the begining is quite limited

Have you tried snapping to the piece above, digging the ground down slightly, and snapping to the bottom of the pillar, and then leveling the ground again?

Usually works for me.

building downward when you dont have the ability to put a raycast onto the face of a block to build from is the one major weakness of the building system. One potential fix would be when the block is aimed at a snap point, holding shift and scroll wheeling cycles through possible connections for deliberate placement.

Place a post on the ground near the upper post. Look up and down that pole, most of the time you're able to get a piece to snap to the point you want. Place new piece and remove the 'guide' part you placed first.

I just look on the floor/ground directly under the post and it usually snaps to the bottom of the one above it

The question is why you cant knee or even prone in Build mode.
And why there is no first person camera

btw you can make a L Shape with pillars, so that you finally place your stuff upwards (with using the grid)

Yeah you kinda have to build from the ground up. There are various tricks. You actually don' HAVE to snap things if you are just needing a pillar on bottom for support.

There's probably a solution but it's hard to explain these things.. been through this ALOT especially when building in water. I usually dig the ground out add the pillar then put the ground back.
