Too many Trolls? ..
I know i'm gonna get righteously flamed for this, but it crosses my mind (frequently, hence my post), that here are maybe too many Trolls, especially for solo play. My understanding is that some aspects of the game scale for solo and multi play, but that's just a guess based on what I have read. In multi play I guess groups are clearing Trolls and Troll caves to open up the land. For solo play should the frequency of Trolls be reduced?

As pretty high level mobs, way above my current solo ability to deal with (i've done 2 bosses and wear bronze). they seem to me to be super common. They range quite widely and chase for ages. They start in fairly low level biomes, as in the black forest. I can't currently get even close to consider clearing them out and as a solo player mostly, the likelyhood of me clearing them out is miles away in my future.

Don't get me wrong; I do like the idea of the Trolls in game-play terms; you always have to be on your guard when mining copper and tin or blundering through the forest in sprint mode, there is no 'AFK-ing' here, but for me, at least, here just seems to be far to many of them around a) for impact: "EEK A TROLL!!" and b) they are just a tad to common and stifle game play and get a bit irritating.

Fire away!
:)

Actually its kinda easy to carry a bow for this
MAMKO Feb 18, 2021 @ 4:28am
I've been playing solo whole time and its Ive gone straight from deer rags to troll set by hunting them with bow. Just kite them around. Also, mb its just ur poor luck since I dont meet them too often in my solo play

You can just parry them with the bronze shield no problems. Then i just stab them whit the knife :D:glitch:

yea... in fact you can be totally naked and just kite them with a bow. and it seems rmd on how often they spawn on my new world i must really invest time to search for trolls on my starter island and there are 3 black forest biomes on it... -,-

use a shield they do zero damage once you lvl your block enough and you can parry them.

This game has mobs that can all be met with the same phrase.

"oh crap its a ........."

Your response as you gear, level and get good changes from defensive stance with a little bit of wee coming out to ignore completely, with a variety of reactions in between. Trolls are time consuming, that's all.

Place workbenches in skelly and trolls cave entrances to reduce spawns as you might cover the area.

Yeah the Eikyr power and a decent bow makes short work of them. I actually think the whole world is over populated, not just trolls. Too many routine fights just getting from A to B for my liking. Even deer and boar etc. I would prefer less of them but with lower ingredient requirements to retain crafting balance.

They definitely hit hard early and the log trolls have an insane melee range on the downswing - I highly recommend evading that attack entirely. If you're in bronze it shouldn't really be a problem unless its starred trolls. Trolls telegraph their attacks really well which makes roll timing easier.

Also, eat the best foods you can make. Being able to withstand 2-3 regular hits is huge for learning how to deal with them and enough to be able to escape. If you're mining in the forest you probably want the stamina boost anyway.

Cheesy tip: Use arrows - if you're scared of them then you can knock down a whole bunch of trees which they will have to navigate around while you can simply hop over conveniently and even get them to chop wood for you.

Totally agree with this. There always seems to be too many mobs in games and they just get annoying over time. I've killed so many graylings I've got resin coming out of the walls.

True. Trolls are no problem. Greylings are awful, like a swarm.

at least trolls have useful loot

How long does Troll Hide stay relevant though? It's their only drop.

Greydwarf eyes are needed to make Portals, and you can burn through a ton of resin if you're big on placing torches everywhere.

Also to the OP: Trolls are super weak against anything that disrupts their pathing, like trenches, steep inclines, or even fallen trees.

If you're exploring in the Black Forest, consider clear-cutting as you go while leaving the resulting logs intact - then when a troll shows up you'll have lots of cover to hide behind while you snipe them in the face with Fire Arrows.

Actually, nope. They drop money as well.

The meadows and dark forest is a joke easy zone. Stop asking for nerfs. If you cant play this game, maybe play some clicker games where you cant fail.

Also op is a troll. How many trolls did you encountered? 20? sure 50trolls would be a bit too much, but i think OP found 5trolls and he is whinning.
awesome post. I just asked a question and for advice, bad mood today or is this just how you are all the time?

And for the rest of you - thanks for the suggestions, you are entirely right, I haven't actually tried to take them on properly and just assumed they were a bit much when I saw the damage when they stomped me. The bow and/or bronze shield block is great advice, I will get after them. :)
