"oh crap its a ........."
Your response as you gear, level and get good changes from defensive stance with a little bit of wee coming out to ignore completely, with a variety of reactions in between. Trolls are time consuming, that's all.
Place workbenches in skelly and trolls cave entrances to reduce spawns as you might cover the area.
Also, eat the best foods you can make. Being able to withstand 2-3 regular hits is huge for learning how to deal with them and enough to be able to escape. If you're mining in the forest you probably want the stamina boost anyway.
Cheesy tip: Use arrows - if you're scared of them then you can knock down a whole bunch of trees which they will have to navigate around while you can simply hop over conveniently and even get them to chop wood for you.
True. Trolls are no problem. Greylings are awful, like a swarm.
Greydwarf eyes are needed to make Portals, and you can burn through a ton of resin if you're big on placing torches everywhere.
Also to the OP: Trolls are super weak against anything that disrupts their pathing, like trenches, steep inclines, or even fallen trees.
If you're exploring in the Black Forest, consider clear-cutting as you go while leaving the resulting logs intact - then when a troll shows up you'll have lots of cover to hide behind while you snipe them in the face with Fire Arrows.
Actually, nope. They drop money as well.
And for the rest of you - thanks for the suggestions, you are entirely right, I haven't actually tried to take them on properly and just assumed they were a bit much when I saw the damage when they stomped me. The bow and/or bronze shield block is great advice, I will get after them. :)
