Death Is.... Excessive
Anyone else think the penalties for death are a bit extreme? I died twice and lost ten points in almost everything.

Edit: It seems like this is definitely a divisive subject. That just reinforces the need for a death penalty game option. At the end of the day a game is a game, and they are meant to be fun. I personally find challenge fun, but not extreme penalties for random events which are completely out of my control, death very often being an example in this game. Yesterday I couldn't wait to get home and play. Today I couldn't care less. I have no interest anymore because I know that any time I put in will simply disappear when I inevitably die again due to unforseen circumstances. Unless there is a way to get rid of skill loss on death, I can't seem myself playing this game again or recommending it to anyone. THAT is the real problem, and one the devs desperately need to address.

Life is hard
Stamina is hard
Ore is hard
Upgrading/crafting is a grind
Death is grueling (due to the 25hp/stam with no food buffs) and punishing.
there's nothing challenging about losing skills on death, it's punishment and there's a difference

the reason many games are going away from punishment in favor of direct challenge is that at the end of the day all heavy death penalties do is pad game time. making enemies more difficult or environmental hazards more damaging etc is a great way to make the game more difficult.

making the player spend extra hours to regain lost skills adds nothing, it's just tedious.

I very much dislike how much you lose when you die, Many times dying from random things that are either bugs or glitches.

Use to make me mad, But I kind of figure those levels don't really effect much. Just small increases in stats?

Could be wrong, But if I am then it's BS, And death should only lose the XP you've gained towards the next level! You shouldn't lose 5 or 10 levels for no reason. More so when death is apart of the game.
Heck even one of the trailers is all about dying over and over again.

261 DAYS AND 2 DEATHS . Death is rare in this game and should be feared . There should be perma death . Restart new character but keep base + items .
I admire you peoples determination and tenacity.
Clearly there are some truly hardcore players, real men, amongst you and I lift my hat to you gentlemen.

My corpse is stuck in a spot which has a nearly 0% percent chance of being recovered.

Either I...

a) My inventory was full and the only chance I'd have would be to run there completely naked and press "E" to recover it all at once. But I automatically pick up trash that is lying around and when I reach my corpse while being chased by 5+ mobs, I can't loot my corpse all at once because of all the trash in my inventory. Dying means skill loss.

b) Rebuild an entire tech tree, build a boat and find an island with a meadow for boar leather, spend countless hours mining bronze and tin. Travel all the way back to the starting area to get another swamp key because the first one is still on my corpse. Once I've spent 10+ hours doing all that, I'll travel back to recover my corpse. My corpse is in a really awful spot. A stone tower with the first few steps missing and there is a draughr spawner inside. It's a mini swamp biome on a peninsula in the plains biome. So you have mobs from both biomes to contend with all at once.

c) Uninstall the game and wait for the difficulty to be toned down. Actually I don't mean the difficulty but rather the penalty. The difficulty makes the game fun but the penalty for death is too extreme. Way too time consuming.

I don't want to say exactly how, but you can quickly and easily recover those lost skill points after death and I for one don't feel the least bit guilty for doing it. All this "punishment" really does for me is make me want to put the game down and play something else.

Here we go... a thread full of fanboys posing as hardcore, claiming that the loss of skill 'makes the game', when there are a thousand other things that actually MAKE the game and don't PUNISH you and reverse progress.

At the very least, this should be a toggle. I would probably not use the option, and I would probably still play with the stat loss penalty - but that is the entire thing there.

I wouldn't use the toggle, but I fully agree that it needs to exist. Not everyone wants to lose stats over dying. Anyone standing here arguing otherwise, or arguing against a TOGGLE should be dragged out and shot.

Thats why you dont loose more skills when running for corpse (no skill drain buff), and when ya loot corpse, you get corpse run buff, which greatly reduce incoming damage and you can run faster or smtin.

I know the feeling of being unable to loot your corpse, when i first encountered deatsquito while trying to kill Lox, i couldnt get my bronze gear back. Died a few times trying to loot my corpse (no more skills drained, only first death counted). I was kinda mad, so i just leveled sneaking a bit, got troll armor (bonus to sneaking), sneaked to my corpse (had to snipe deathsquito with bow, cuz he was camping my corpse) and that was it. Ez. It only required using a brain for a bit.

But I agree with the OP, I don't like particularly harsh death penalties, I play games to relax and have fun. I don't mind dying and doing corpse runs.

If I find myself losing a bunch of skill points, I will just use a cheat engine table to get them back quickly.

There are no "harsh death penalties". That's a GenZ hyperbole to further complain about dying.

In games like "don't starve" (2013), you die, it's game over. Exception if you build a mid tier item that let's you respawn once for a harsh semi-permanent penalty in HP (-30 HP as long as the item is present, which is 1/5 of your maximum health). And even if you respawn, all items are thrown on the ground (meaning they will rot or be stolen by monsters).

And in DS, you can die far more easily (starvation, cold, sanity, dehydration...)

I find the penalties in Valheim extremely light. Skills are pretty much useless right now, so losing 10% of your skills has nearly no consquences. That's not harsh, that's merely annoying because you loose some time for a corpse run.

If it really is that bad.. Open Console and turn on god mode. Grab loot. Run back. Turn it off. I had a friend that wandered into a mountain biome and died at the peak near a dragon nest with a golem standing next to this runestone. Wish a pack of wolves...

This is a really good suggestion. Thank you! I had completely forgotten that console commands were a thing.
