Dedicated Server Setup Help: LAN IP or WAN IP? Is "-public 1/0" needed?
Hello all,

I am seeing different things online for starting a dedicated server. I have my server connecting when started using Valheims dedicated server program, but am not seeing my server name listed in the Steam Server view/list, or in the games community server list for friends to join.
Searching through tutorials.. I see some people add the "-public 1 or -public 0" to their Valheim Dedicated server .bat file. Some don't use it at all? I've tried all 3 ways with no change that I can see. The only way I can connect to my own server, which is the same pc I am playing on, is to use Steams server list and "Add the server by IP", using my LAN IP and the PORT recommended 2456. Using my external address (WAN) gives me a "no response" from server when trying to add it this way. Which is it? I ask because I've read different articles that say use LAN IP while another will say WAN IP.

All recommended Ports are opened through router and firewalls.
Initially I downloaded STEAMCMD, and did the update. But then just ended up using Valheims Dedicated Server Software to define my server specs and execute.

If your router does not support NAT loopback/hairpinning, then you are forced to connect locally via your LAN IP. Most routers these days do support it. I had a Netgear router a few years ago that didn't, mind - so they do exist!

Otherwise, you should be able to connect locally via either. Anyone outside your home network will have to use the WAN (external IP) to connect.

As for the -public 1 switch, I am unsure if it is required or not. Cannot hurt to add it in until more info is known IMO.

Ok that makes sense on why it only shows up to me at home using my LAN IP. So I need to give my friends my WAN IP to connect directly through steam. I'm using the newer modem/routers that Xfinity gives out to customers to use. It seems to have all the settings you'd want to be able to configure...port forwarding, triggering, ext.

Any Idea why my server name won't show up in steam or Valheim server list normally?
