Walls can get bad over time, so you have to repair them. They seem to do so when they aren't properly covered by roof. It's best to put the firepit on dirt ground and build a little chimney.

Building pieces meant to be protected from the weather (wooden floor pieces, for example) will turn green very quickly if exposed to the rain. Just repair them and they'll look new again. But if left exposed they will continue to take damage from the weather.

You can put a fire in your house. Campfires cannot be built on wood though, so you need to account for that, and also allow for some sort of smoke ventilation for the fire.

I've experienced this as well.. My solution for other outer buildings.. Build them like I did when I was a carpenter.. I framed the building, put the roof on, then the walls and finally the floors.. Once the roof goes on, nothing turned green..

I build fires outside along the side of the wall(s) cover them so not to go out in a storm, and use them for cooking..
Fires outside will heat the home.. a single fire pit will heat a 2x3 building easy.. larger buildings i'll add a few on the other side. near my work bench.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you leave building pieces uncovered, underwater or out in the elements, they'll eventually degrade and "rot" but will never destroy themselves. The whole degrading system only takes the parts' health down to half, and that's it. It basically just weakens them until they're covered by a roof.
