snapping doesn't work

I'm trying to build for the first time and just want to place 4 poles in each corner and place a roof over my workbench. It says left shift to snap but nothing happens when i click it. Should it not snap into place in a straight line from the first pole a placed?

I think holding left shift disables the snapping.
It should snap into position if you have it in the right spot without too much in the way, but i've struggled placing the last bit of roof on my home as well.

You can use one pole with a small surrounding roof to enable the workbench for repairs/crafting. If you need to extend build space or repair something/demolish you don't need to establish a roof over the bench.

Well i got a big roof covering my bench and tanning rack etc. I couldn't snap poles onto the bottom as it won't let me, had to free place them so it merges with the other pole, weird...

But now it says my bench is too exposed, guess i gotta build walls also?

ahh i fixed it by putting a wall just behind it
