Use Portals Carefully
I have only three portals at my base. It is convenient to change the tag on a base portal to the desired destination. One must wait for the change to take effect. I have changed a portal tag from "Limbo" to "Perdition" and stepped right through to find myself in Limbo with an unconnected portal at my back. Limbo is on a different island from my base. Limbo has only a small hut with a basic workbench, the portal, and one empty chest. No raft, no karve, no longship. Just a nice two-day run across the island to a connected portal I had left on the other side of the island.

New procedure: 1) change portal tag; 2) do the hokey-pokey and turn yourself about; then 3) step through the portal to your intended destination.

Yep, ya gotta wait a couple seconds.

recommend:
more portals

alternative:
1. rename portal to unused word
2. wait for disconnect
3. type in new portal name
4. connect
5. step through

Yup, I discovered this bug the hard way too. The gate needs to shut down faster when the name is changed.

Best way is with a portal nexus. Just make a building full of portals as a hub. You'll have one extra loading screen to get places but it's much more organized and stable than renaming portals.

bug or not, I like this delay.
there are (rare) times I want to rename portals, and without this brief moment of it still being connected after the name change, it'd be a real pain otherwise.

I made a portal at my base for exploring and then create a portal when I'm in the go to get back.
Did that, stored my valuables, logged out, came back today and my portal is unconnected.
Great. Now I gotta fetch my boat somehow...

It would be nice if it replayed the connection animation so you know exactly when the exit changed from portal A to portal B.

I do not use them at all. :)

Always have at least two portals at your main base. One for where you want to go, the other leave it unconnected. The unconnected one lets you set up new bases and works miracles after accidents like the OP had.

You can always bring emergency boat materials with you and portal through with them, and leave them in a chest. I have boat materials at least 4 or 5 of my houses/halls. Just in case.

Personally I don't even try to rename them. If I feel I will lose track of them I will just put up signs for them. Would be nice if we could use guck or something for the letters to glow though.

I just name my 001 etc Up to 31 portals in my latest game. Being a no death run I have been extra careful.

I forget things as well so I have each portal location marked by name on the map.

Step 1. Make a new base with 10 or more pseudo named portals. Step 2, invite the local populace or friends. Step 3, enjoy the chaos
