Valheim
Im in the swamp going for iron and I see some kinda flame elemental?
What are those? I dont think I should get near them as Im just new to iron tier equipment and have no flame resistance. Just fully upgraded bronze armor hunters bow bronze arrows girded iron shield and iron mace. Food is stew carrot soup and sausage. Have minor stamina health and poison resist meads.

Surtlings, They throw fire, they drop cores, they die if they touch water. The fire geyser is their spawn. If you are properly fed up no reason you can't fight them. If you are in a comfortable spot no reason you can't pick them off with a bow.

if you dig out around the geyser they die as they spawn in.

All that said I have always avoided them , burial chambers offer more than enough cores for my needs.

Just take em out with your bow from a distance. Fairly easy. They drop cores and charcoal. Be more afraid of all the poison adds you can get in the swamp. I still have nightmares. ( You will also run into Surtlings down in the Ashlands biome as well later on )

Pretty much all true but I also disagree.

Once you tame fire geysers by submerging them in 1 inch of water (I am serious) they become a serious simple way to not only gather cores but coal.

1 FG will produce about 10- to 25 coal every few minutes. This can be taken advantage of using gates. You drop 2 gates 1 in, the other to the next FG, finally going to your base, on my MP server we call it a 'Coal Run'. Once you have 3 to 4 (6 is best) you will never cut down wood to burn for coal ever again. Plus you will have all the cores you need to place gates to... well everywhere. Once I get a box full I leave them to rot next to the FG.

If you build a swamp base near a 2 tamed FGs I promise you will never run out of coal for your iron forges.
The only swamp critters that give me a challenge are lvl 3 blobs lvl 3 draugr and wraiths. However the wraiths only come out at night so if you cant make it outta the swamp. I just enter a crypt build a campfire by the entrance and wait for daybreak.
One other question? Is the longboat faster than the karve. Im solo playing so I dont want to waste iron. Geez the iron requirements are way to high especially for upgrades.
Longboat is superior is almost every way. Long boat is faster, has more cargo cap, and more HP.

The Karve is faster to turn (very nimble actually) I believe it also has a shallower draft but I'm not sure. If you are shallow enough to matter your too shallow.
If you want to go out on the ocean or do a lot of coastline exploring. use the Longboat. If you want to follow rivers and narrow shallow passageways, use the Karve. The Karve has only about 1/2 the draft of the Longboat and will pass through reeds where a longboat will get grounded. The Longboat at full sail is also far faster than the Karve.
shoo. WOW, sounds like Quite a realm of magic, haha, i'd be embarrassed to even step FOOT into The Swamp, without a lil' iron in My Pocket

Longboat does fairly well with most of the rivers that bisect islands Ive found. The ones that peter off I dont even bother trying. But Ive used a few of the rivers as shortcuts through large islands. Some need a bit of expanding/clearing rocks out but the time paid is worth it.

I would agree with the first reply on anything except it not being worth setting up a farm. It takes only a few seconds to clear enough of the ground away to kill the surtlings. And as stated the coal can really help. Just remember you have to be within draw distance for them to die, so any more than one or two spawns is probably a waste.

Roughly how much area has to be cleared around the FG? 2 meters? 4 meters?
Plunk down a workbench to stop the Surtlings from spawning and keep an eye out for random spawning mobs...then you can clear the terrain from under the FireHole: remember to remove the workbench and any 'anti spawning' constructions to allow for spawning to continue. If spawning stops...check how close something 'construction' wise is to the FireHole. Adjust as needed with stopping/starting the spawning process again. So much coal for standing guard through the night and collecting every few spawns. 5min cooldown before another spawn event. Collect Wraith chain and perhaps a trophy as you monitor during the night. You must be near the spawner for it to work, can't teleport in/out to collect. You have to 'watch' the process, like taming boars/wolves. Enjoy all the passive coal you can get! Cores are so many, you begin to 'use' them in firepits for excitement and disposal. One of the only items in Valheim you can 'destroy'/delete. I toss mine in a nice big Bonefire for effect. Enjoy! Equip Surtling Cores to a quick slot, then 'use' them at a firepit or perhaps anything that can 'input' something to burn?? not sure about kilns, smelters and such, don't see why not?!

Clear a few floor panels distance away from the actual geyser....2 each side should be enough, make certain it's like knee deep water but not quite swimmable, cause you need to run thru for collection. Just deep enough that the Surtlings have to wade through it to get to land, they'll fry out pretty quickly. Once in water, seems like 5 hp damage every few 1/2 seconds. The higher HP units might make it to the edge...

If you can handle skeletons and drauga, and you've scouted the area around them, you'll be fine. They hit weakly and have low health, so they die quick when you hit them. They drop surtling cores so they're often well worth going after if you're early bronze age.

By themselves, you should be able to take them out fairly safely even in melee. But they are fast so you may need to chase them a bit, and their attack does impair your visibility so the way you can get in trouble is if you run into other enemies while chasing them.

So if you're at bronze, it is highly recommended you clear out some of the enemies around them (including leeches) before engaging to avoid being targeted by multiple attackers. Then go get them.
You dont have to clear much, maybe a radius of about 10 meters or so. And its swamp so usually there isnt much land there anyway.

The surtlings dont do much for damage, its just annoying to chase them/sometimes shoot them due to their erratic movements.

I wouldnt bother with a table myself. Its a quick thing to set up. Dont need to construct anything really. You're just taking away the ground, any water will damage them.

The only thing to be careful of is wandering mobs. Dont go deep with the digging, should still be able to walk normally on the ground thats under the water. So no issue with getting stuck in a hole with a slime. Before digging into the water stand at the waters edge for a minute or so to draw out any leeches.
that is The Science, of warfare, no matter what BIOME, just do Your best, and Love What You Do, Become The Protector, Not The Defeater, ((and earn ur place)):, i guess it's a Long Road, to get to where You need to be, but worth It, Totally, Follow The Way
Got lucky the first swamp biome I found was small only had 4 crypts. The last crypt had the location for bones mass. So it should be a sizeable swamp I hope with lotsa crypts. Need more iron to complete my iron armor set. But first I really need to locate the merchant to get my carry weight up.
