swamp key problem

I went into a crypt in the swamp. I got caught in a dead end passage accessible by swimming but could not get out. eventually, I died when my energy and health ran out. But now, when I got to the crypt, it won't let me in because my swamp key is with the rest of my stuff in the crypt. Is there a way to get my key back? And why is the crypt locked when I had unlocked it?

as the guy said, you went to wrong crypt

you can kill second elder for second key tho

Crypt doors stay open once you've unlocked them, so you're probably at the wrong crypt as mentioned above.

Once unlocked, a crypt stays unlocked. Panokkio is right, your in the wrong crypt.

I recently saw another reddit post of someone being unable to enter an already unlocked crypt without a key. They said that they were able to enter it again after their co-op friend dropped a key for them.
If you've held onto your spare ancient seeds and The Elder isn't too far out of your way, your best bet would be to fight him again. If you don't want to risk putting in that much investment only to find out it doesn't work, you could instead cheat yourself in another swamp key using the command console.

Just because it's an early access game I would recommend in future to have a second world to stash your stuff in just in case you see yourself getting screwed by something that doesn't seem intentional by design.

I do have a lot of elder seeds. I will go and kill it again. I do have another world to transfer my stash. What I should have done is once inside the crypt, log out and leave the key in the stash world so that I can retrieve it again! Thank for your help!

wait, you mean that literally the iron doors spawned back and block you from entering?
or maybe you go inside and get message that it's blocked?

yes the doors are shut again and request the key to unlock, just as if I hadn't been there. Yet my stash is inside and the skull and bones icone shows this is the crypt! It is not a mistake on my part.

The crypt you were in is unlocked once and for all once you opened it.

You can kill Elder again for an extra key if you plan to abandon your corpse alltogether.

No matter what people say here, crypts will relock after leaving the area for some time. We have witnessed it multiple times and tested it. Yes they will stay unlocked for some time depending on what you do, but they will re lock if the area is not visited in a certain time frame. Not server issues, not local client issues, just crypts relocking after time.

But in my case, I had set up a camp close to the crypt in case of death. I always do this. When I died in the crypt because of being unable to unstuck myself, i returned immediately to the crypt door withing at most a minute. The crypt was close and the death symbol showed just a few feet away. I did go and kill the elder again (I set up portals to move quickly) and with a new key, returned to the crypt (my death symbol still showed) and opened the door. The crypt set up was different then my previous visit and even thought I cleaned it up, there were no longer a passage leading to where I had died. I can make my equipment again but something happened with my first visit that made it as if I had never been to the crypt yet I had died inside. I did search the outdoor area but none of my stash was found. I'm just saying that this could be a rare bug.

There is no map for the crypts. That said your death marker is underground where you died. The crypts can be large and chances are that your marker was close to an unlocked crypt.
