Mobile Number Discord Required

Why is it a requirement to provide a cell number to get on discord server.
What prevents them from abusing the privilege of having my number.
There are plenty of measures in place to prevent bots on discord itself so i don't consider that a valid excuse to obtain ones cell number.
I don't see money as the issue as Velheim has broken record sales for an early access game.
I was able to connect to their discord server before without the requirement, now all of the sudden the requirement is there.
I would just like a valid reason for the requirement.

Trolling. If you have to associate a phone number with your login to discord (which associates it with you as a person), you're not *as* likely to be a pest. It does not prevent it, but it does reduce it dramatically.

yeah you're right. because there is exactly no other way to combat trolls in discord without forcing us to share our phone numbers with discord.

There's plenty of other ways. None of them are as effective or as reasonable to accomplish for a tiny team dealing with thousands of people.

Moderators. The devs dont have to police the discord or forums, they can appoint moderators to each.

You can expect anti-anonymity to be one of the major ways social sites combat harassment, trolling, etc in the future. Anonymity is what promotes true human nature in the first place.

While some may consider it invasion of privacy, I welcome it. There are far too many people abusing services and hiding behind aliases already.
