I think padded armor should have used dark metal instead ?
The progression is just weird . Black forest unlock copper armor swamp unlock iron armor , mountain unlock wolf armor but plain unlock padded armor which required a lot of iron (and linen too but metal type more important .
Thing is , when you unlock a tier of armor you have to face a lot of risk in order to obtain said metal that you need to craft appropriate stuffs . Like having to deal with greywarf harrasing you or go to the crypt and fight stuffs in close space but plains 's padded armor ? Just sneak into gobbo camp , quickly grab linen, high tail it and grow them somewhere else.
Dark metal currently only for weapons and after you craft them they just sit there in storage while iron and bronze to an extend , have use for construction and furniture .iron does not respawn unlike goblin and theirs dark metal so your iron supply take further blow .

Going back to farm iron while decked out in Black Metal weapons and Wolf Armor was just... weird.

correction.... a tiny amount of iron. only the head goes the NORMAL route... chest/egs take 3/6/9... for all the ore we use in this game thats a joke. clearly the armor is tiered around the flax, which for many is a pain. we do NEED silver/dark steel gear/weapons/tools though. also typically in a zone when u get the armor of that zone, it seems much harder to die. with padded, to me at least, it feels like we are MISSING something. it feels like we should have a stronger armor....maybe that darksteel just isnt added yet??? u get nothing from the boss currently so maybe u have to beat him to make it *in the future*. the "end" is currently weird since its not the end

Yeah, it really should.

I dont think flax is a pain to get . You can just run into the camp , quickly grab a sample of it and then run away fast, those flax plant usually found at the edge of the camp . Dark metal however , involve fighting fuling which can hit very hard and thus more risky to get . But dark metal quickly become useless unlike bronze , copper and iron .of course silver kinda become redundant too unless you keep crafting silver arrow but it a bad trade as silver is limited while dark metal is unlimited

im trying to say, the game isnt finished and we dont know whats getting added??? flame metal does not even have a use PERIOD currently. it seems pretty obvious that darkmetal is not fully implimented currently. but on that note, yes i agree. game should be more like terraria.... allow u to make BUILDING blocks out of metals ;) that would be a neat addition and sink for anything u can gather to build with.

That struck me too. Huh? I don't need black metal for the armor in this biome? But this biome is black metal? what gives! Suddenly you're like, screw mining, imma farmer!

I don't hate it, but it was a change to the progression scheme folled since the start.

I, also, don't hate it. It's just odd. Since I skipped the the drake helm (never got a drake trophy) I went up two tiers by... using iron? Weird.
yeah the progression in the game seems very unfinished atm. By the time you get silver armor, you probably already have a huge stockpile of black metal and iron and are just at the mercy of RNG in terms of locating the Mountain boss to unlock access to padded armor, which like you said is pointlessly easy to aquire at that phase of the game.

However to me this seems like a temporary oversight or a way to implement assets that they have already developed into the game to at least make them accessible while they flesh out a more comprehensive progression route in the future.

Personally, I feel that once you have unlocked frost resist potions, accessing silver should not be locked behind a boss item, and padded armor should either require black metal, or a black metal set should be introduced that replaces padded armor's current stats, while padded armors current armor values should be lowered, but have its movement penalties reduced/removed, and therefore give a late-game option between higher mobility or higher armor

I don't disagree but I'm chalking it up to unfinished early access and I'm waiting to see what they have in store for material balance within the game.

I was assuming that we would have blacksteel plate at some point as the next tier.
Samoth Mar 1, 2021 @ 12:19am
studded or plated would be the higher progression, imho. Folks seem to do this sometimes. Imho, like in D&D, padded armor, is inferior to strapped, banded, studded, or plated of any kind. Padded implies it is simply couch cushions tied to your body ;p.

It threw me off as well. I don't hate the idea of Iron and Flax but i was expecting more for the dark iron. The need for flax pushed me to set up a small fortified farm in the plains, after 2 stacks of flax and everything upgraded, now i just grow tons of barley.

Padded doesnt necessarily need black metal, but it sure needs a revamp/rebalance. IT'S SO CHEAP
