The survival genre has been a genre where every game has some glaring flaw and can't seem to hit the mark. Valheim manages to hit the sweet spot in nearly all categories.
Valheim isn't innovative, what it is is just really really good.
People get engrossed in their own creations in a new world.
People are probably tired of the "In minecraft" meme
People love a game promoted by death metal?
Are they all exactly like this one? I haven't played the forest, hated ARK.
When I first watched a guy play it with 5 friends running through a dungeon they were saying it played like old school gauntlet.
Everyone has fun with this one. At least at first.
Inexpensive
Zero hassle single player (no 3rd party login/server/other bs for solo)
Very, very good random gen
Solid crafting system
Solid building system
Solid content in terms of bosses and overall progression unfolding
Never rushed (and if you like to build/explore can take all the time you want)
Super tight for an EA game
Good sound
Good overall immersion
Good combat with deeper mechanics than immediately obvious
Solid alchemy/food buff system
Survival elements (weather, environmental debuffs, food - but works differently than most)
Replay potential due to all of the above (or long play depending on your style)
Stamina-based almost everything "keeps you honest"
No major RPG elements (skills grow thru use, there's no xp/levels/talents, some weapons have fun alt attacks)
Some degree of grind
Brutality awaits the impatient and/or unprepared (I consider myself casual, entirely solo, and not having any problems I can't explain as my own failing(s))
The land is vast, the maps can sprawl - great for those who like to explore, build bases/outposts, and deal with logistics - some don't seem to care for it but clearly many do
It's not Skyrim or the latest AC game but it IS a nice combo of elements in a voxel-esque survival game that looks good and is fun to play.
Don't get heated now.
