Are birds eating my carrot seeds?
I seem to have fewer carrot seeds than I plant by the time they are ready to harvest. Are birds eating them or something?

Dwarfs spawn in, steal them and run off. Put a fence round the field. Trolls will also destroy them if they walk over them I think.

did you put a fence around the crops? otherwise, they shouldnt just be disappearing. but the crops themselves can be damaged by attacks and in that case they will disappear.

i have exact same problem. Planted 1000 carrots and harvested only like 300-400

Boars that escape your pens will also eat your crops.

If you plant veggies too close to one-another, some may have an open space problem. These plants cannot be recovered and will disappear instead of growing.

I have a stake fence around my entire base and my boars are penned in and haven't escaped. Maybe I'm planting them too close to each other.

You'll see it happen if the seedling turns orange/brown and says "--- needs more open space". Generally you should keep a distance about 1.5 meters, which there's no analogue for, but your character should be able to stand between the seedlings without touching either. It's easier to figure out by practice, honestly.

you should get 3 seed per plant.

I plant 72 at a time. I get 216 seeds. The only reason you would end with fewer than 3 times planted is if you are planting them too close and some are dying.

This is a very common issue to watch out for and there's no warning til after you've done it, it's trial by error.

Melee attacks in gardens wipe out plants. Use a bow to kill raiding mobs. You can avoid all of the problems by building out in the water like this.

Is that a thing? I've had my boars roam my early base with crops planted and never noticed any missing.

Sorry, it was me.

I like carrots, and well... carrot soup is pretty darn tasty.
