the wikipedia states that you can catch fish by hand. you cannot. the harpoon also apparently doesn't hit fish, neither do arrows. hopefully soon we will have some way of catching fish that doesn't involve randomly happening across the trader with your pockets full of gold to buy the fishing pole and bait.

I caught a fish with my hands days before even learning there was a fishing pole. I remember thinking, "Who would ever do this?!".

The fish in question may have been dead or something, though. How it ended up dead, if it was, I have no idea.

Yeah, I think harpoons and spears should let you fish imo.

Wait till you have a near dead calm wind day and build the ground in a large area of water near flush with the surface. They'll beach themselves and you can pick them up. Fishing is only useful in the early game and what is right now the late game. There's better food for the bulk of the game in between.

One of the patches removed fishing by hand when the fish is in water. But if a fish washes up on land you can pick it up by hand.

Harpoons are used for fishing. Fishing serpents that is.

I've heard a claim that you can fish with a spear but haven't confirmed that myself. I do think that fishing with a bow should be possible. Fishing with the fishing pole is fine and all, but it doesn't make sense to not be able to fish with a bow when that is a legit way of fishing.

You CAN catch fish by hand, but it's weird and inconsistent. Definitely doesn't always work.
I would also like to see fishing be more tied to crafting or something.

I caught a fish by hand, no idea how it happened, but dead fish was in my hands. Tried spear fishing, but that did not go as planned.

The fish aren't "mobs" so much as interactables, so you can't hunt them with damage. But if you can physically push them onto land you can always interact with them in that condition.

Yeah, I've caught plenty while they've washed ashore. I just think it would be a nice addition to enable bow and spear fishing.

AFAIK you can only catch fish by hand if they washed up on land. That's the only time I catched them atleast

You actually can catch fish by hand if you're close to it.
They can also get stranded at sandbanks after a storm.
You could in theory dig out a place for fish to swim into and then close it off and later pick them up.

Just tried getting fish with my hand. Doesn't work anymore. Tried a few times too. Fish are literally close to me and it says "fish" without being able to pick it up.

Same here. I appeared to kill a fish with my ax but there was no "e" prompt to pick it up. It shouldn't be easy to catch fish by hand but it certainly shouldn't be impossible either.
