What’s the point in paths?
I get you can make paths around your village. Is there even a point making a path to a node or dungeon that never respawn?

Paths seemed like a waste of time outside of aesthetic reasons in your base. Same with paved roads. If it granted some sort of stamina usage rate reduction when sprinting it might actually be worth doing.

If you find yourself running the same path that many times, what you actually need is a portal, not a road.
If you're concerned about hitting rocks and so on with a cart for transporting metal, the distance is either so long it isn't worth the investment or so short it won't make a difference.

I know it's only a game so the thatch isn't going to break but I could never bring myself to use a roof tile for a road surface.

If they stayed flat they would be better. The cobblestone I am hoping is better.

I have two bases. One on each coast of my starting landmass. (Which is insanely massive)

I have docks on both sides as navigating around can be a pain and it saves time.

I have a path between the two to take a cart on... It makes it much easier as that cart smashes a lot less. Though it isn't perfect and I'm hoping cobblestone may eventually help.

Right now I'm just gathering iron. I'm 2.5 crypts done and have picked up a little over 150 iron. One I have a good stock pile I'll start looking at doing just that.

With the path and the buff I can run it in about 7-8 minutes with a 1 ton cart and about 6-7 minutes with a empty cart. It took me 13 minutes the first time I did it with a cart.

The cart is useful for bring home heavy loads, like wood, and a clear path means not getting snagged on anything on the way nor having to think about navigating.

I like to plant long rows of trees for harvesting with a path between them. It makes forestry easier.

The point of paths seems to be whatever the player wants to do with them to shape their own little world, aesthetic or otherwise.

The thing that frustrates me about making paths is that it's so hard to make them nice and smooth unless they're going over flat to nearly flat ground in the first place. Which kinda defeats the purpose, since I primarily want them for easier cart routes over uneven terrain and hills. I know the game can make smooth slopes, they're naturally generated all over the place. But no matter how much I try to level the ground with my hoe, I can never get it very smooth, Sometimes the hoe makes things rougher by leveling. I get better results for some reason if I level ground while looking nearly straight down with the camera, but I still have to wonder if there's some secret hoe technique I just don't know.

Beyond that, even after extensive cart path building, I ended up feeling like just walking back and forth with the ore I could carry directly would have gotten more efficient results anyway. Ore deposits are really spread out one-time things, so you don't get much re-use out of dedicated paths to begin with. I'd really like to build paths for aesthetic purposes, but they just take too long.

Depends how you use it. If you like going back and forth then that's really up to you. Carrying a hoe is always recommend cause you can also make mountain sides flat enough for you to stay on instead of slipping off when you run out of stamina. And why exactly is the mountain even in this? Because that's where you get silver. Also, you don't have to worry about a cart going down hill a mountain. My cart didn't even take damage going down that slope.

It also makes finding stuff easier for people who come and play with you if you arent there to mark your pos. That way they dont have to wander around finding the fort you made that wasnt right on the spawn.
Thats not very nice, what makes you think op's world is a piece of ♥♥♥♥
POS stands for position dont think so negative lol

The real question is not is roads good but why would you ever use a cart in the first place?

The only moment in time I used a cart in this game was when we just unlocked it. And it was mainly to try it. It was hell trying to make it go between trees while doing copper runs and I'm yet to find the cart another usage yet. We always build our villages next to water so if we really need to carry stuff around over long distances then we are going to use boats instead.

Ever since I got my strenght belt I've never even gave an afterthought to the cart.

Another problem is that the stone bench require two iron. Iron is by FAR the hardest mineral to get in this game (I'm in full wolf armor here before I even considered making myself an iron shield or an iron axe (and I'm the dedicated wood chopper!)) and only since I've got the finding bone do I bother trying to farm iron for myself.

So yeah... Roads are for aesthetic only. Even for carts you don't really need roads, it only make it a tad less bothersome.

When we started playing we made a big deal into making roads between villages and stuff... And we are now over day 300 and we haven't even thought of making one yet.

If you're playing with friends then it's easier to carry stuff. If you're playing by yourself majority of the time you will want a cart unless you have the long boat, which takes 100 iron nails. Carrying your ship around is also better than leaving it at the coast because it takes longer for you to sail it to the other side if you ever are on the other side.
