Any way to pick up and move an item you have placed?

I placed two portals and didn't realise they were entered and exited from the sides I put against a wall. It's not real clear first time you use them what way they need to face or even that you cannot enter from both sides.

demolish it, you get the items back

middle mouse click with hammer out by default, it'll destroy the portal and you can pick up the contents you used to build it, including the cores. this works with furnaces and charcoal kilns if and when you ever decide to move your main base.

All of it? Most things I have demolished give part back.
