Which Weapon Should I Choose?
So I just built my forge and I'm on Bronze tier equipment. I've constructed my Ax but I'm wondering if there is a better weapon for combat. I'm looking for suggestions.

Mace?
Sword?
Spear?
Knives?
or the Two Handed thing?

I can only make one more without having to grind for more materials.

I like using a shield so I might not go for the two hander. But since the two hander's stats look tough enough on their own, getting rid of the bronze shield (that I've already made) would free up inventory space. I'd hate to waste the materials I put into the shield though. And right now, I don't really need the space.

The spear looks pretty weak. Its only utility seems to be that it can be thrown, but that doesn't seem very useful since bows exist.

For 1H weapons, the mace seems to have the best stats: high durability, parry, and knockback. The thing about knockback though... is it kinda sucks. It just makes you waste the short amount of time you have to follow up with an attack against a knockbacked enemy chasing it. So I think I would rather have a weapon with low knockback.

So that leaves the sword, which according to the wiki stuns enemies with its secondary attack and that sounds useful.

The thing is, I don't know how each weapon plays; if some have faster attacks than others or longer attack combos, reach, aoe, etc.

So which weapons are best in your experiences?

Why mace? Is knockback a problem?

Mace because its blunt attacks are the most common weakness. It's also helps that it's one-handed, and therefore you can use it with a parrying device. AKA shield.

That being said, my first weapon choice would be an atgeir. Then a mace.

For bronze (and iron), mace is the king simply due to it being the most effective one for swamp and allowing you to use a shield for parrying. The later club weapons are pretty great as well. The only downside they really have at the moment is the way the secondary attack sometimes launches fulings really far away, making you sometimes run a long way to get the loot.
If you want to stun enemies then you want to parry them, leaving them open for that mace secondary attack.

Those are all good suggestions.

Does the sword attack any faster than the mace?

I'm not super sure, but I don't think so. If it's different it's not very different. Then again, I haven't used swords as much as other weapons. Swords don't have the blunt attack weakness exploitation of clubs, or the reach and crowd control of atgeirs. They just don't seem to have the clear niche of my main favorites.

I use the mace and the “two handed thing”. The mace is good for skeletons and draugrs. The 2H I use the most because its spin attack hits everything around you and makes for quick work. I find swords to be boring and the spears to be kinda lame as you kinda gotta carry multiple spears.

The bow! Definitely my favorite. Undetected shots will drop a lot of enemies. Also great for deer.

Pretty much everything in the swamp, including the boss is weak to Blunt. A lvl 4 iron mace for example brings the boss fight under 3 minutes if you keep things up (he regerates) instead of the 15-20 minute fight a lot of people have issues with because they simply aren't doing enough damage quick enough.

I started with spears because I felt it was easier/faster to hunt deers with them. When I finally reached iron I had too much skill with spears already to just pick another weapon. I dont regret my choice, but its not the best pick if you want the biggest damage.

My friend does tons of damage with parry + sword alternate attack.

Mace because your next boss including mobs in the area are weak to blunt damage. You should have 2 weapons with different damage types in your bag though. I personally have mace+shield and atgeir. Atgeir is pretty good for crowd control.

At this point of the game, Clubs for melee. When we look at enemies and their melee weaknesses / resistances, we see that Blunt Weakness is the most common and the Piercing/Slashing resistance is far more common.

Add to the fact that the two endgame clubs currently have very useful stats and the fact that you can use a shield with them, it's just smooth sailing.

If you just want an easy time, but you're using melee. I'd use a Club as a primary and a Polearm to deal with groups of enemies very easily.

The wep you use will depend on what you face. This game actually has resistances and weakness's so some mobs take more damage from some weps then others.

My personal preference is mace, which I initially wasn't keen of using, due to its seemingly slower swing and more stamina use (compared to spear, sword or a knife), as well as the knockback of the enemy, but no way am I going to change to other melee weapon type for now. Swamp area and the boss fight felt unexpectedly smooth and easy. Also, it has a very handy chance of stunning an enemy on a hit. In mountains area now, 9 out of 10 wolves would get stun on the first hit, making it pretty easy time to deal with.
Spear has an issue with detecting the hit box, if there is any tiny landscape incline and you end up just wasting your stamina hitting the air.
Sword is alright, fast swings and fair stamina use.
Two handed weapons, haven't really used any of those, for one reason, it takes away shield and parry bonus is way too nice to give up on it.

At the end of the day, I guess, we all have our own playstyle and the weapon we feel most comfortable with personally. Got to experiment and find your preferred one :)

that's actually false...you probably confuse weakness with "not resistant".
What's true is that blunt has the least amount of resist, making blunt damage the "best" in terms of jack-of-all-trades... even stone elementals are only "not resistant" against blunt.

Slash (swords) have no weak ennemies (yet), and some resistants, but hit faster for less stamina. Same for pierce.

In the entire game, only skellies and blobs are WEAK to blunt (yellow damage number). Blobs especially are among the least encountered enemies (at least on my seed), making maces far from mandatory in the swamps...especially since I prefer killing them with my bow

in the swamps, Draugrs, leeches and surtlings are neither weak to blunt, nor to slash or pierce (white damage)
ghosts are resistant to pierce, blunt and slash
Of course, you should use a mace for Bonemass..

so if you only want 1 weapon, go for blunt. if you don't care and go for effectiveness, use the right tool for the right job.
Daggers are faster and perfect opener (if you use stealth), swords hit faster and use less stamina than maces. 2 handers for groups, maces for blobs and stun.

source: personal experience, as I go to the swamp with my sword, and only change to my mace for blobs if I cannot kill them with my bow.
