You can make them look so cool from an architectonic point of view and I love building.
Therefore your suggestion should be ignored for eternity.
.. ... .. +1
Edit: Technically you could use only 1 teleporter as a hub, but you'd have to remember all the names or make a list and then just type in the name. Yes, it takes a second to type in wherever you want to go every time you teleport but unless you teleport every 2 minutes that shouldn't be a big problem. I still support your idea though.
Thankfully the map system makes it easy to take notes. I just zoomed my map all the way out and created a legend on the side using the icon marking system. I made a list of 2 way connected portal names, one way broken link teleporter names in the wild, and a list of portals at my home base without an outside link. I use that bottom icon for portals and mark them throughout the map with their names.

It makes it so you only need one portal in each location to go to any portal you want.
You could probably also pair it with Faster Teleportation[www.nexusmods.com] to make it even more convenient. Meaning your family and friends doesn't have to wait for those extra seconds for you to come back.
As per the subject of this thread, I kind of agree in principle. In actuality, this is an extremely low tech Norse mythology themed server. I believe the real question would be why you actually require so many portals to begin with. I play in a 6 player world and we barely needed 8 portals all this time. Until a single player came in and decided he would use portals for absolutely everything, long distance or not. He turned the first floor of his home into a straight hub simply because of the quantity of portals he made up for no reasons as he could simply have used his legs and 2 minutes to get to most of them...
Rest of us? Made a portal to Spawn, to our first bronze age village, to our second village, to the merchant... And that's about it. Probably are going to link our next and final village to the second one and call it a day as far as portals are concerned.
I have to admit, I'm baffled by players who complain about non-tedious challenges in the game. A game is basically fun problem-solving, running into monsters and challenges to be overcome, and figuring out how to do that. Yet many complain that the game should be changed to eliminate some challenge they don't like. I don't get it. Just find another game, figure out a solution, or console or mod your way to change it for you.
Having said all that, there are a few tedious things that would be nice to go away. E.g., I would like a hot-key to quickly load my kiln and smelters.
