The cart doesn't seem worth the hassle
I have to admit that I used it for all of ten minutes until I just had to abandon it. Got the cart, loaded some stuff up....and was being chased by a troll almost immediately afterwards. Holy crap if I didn't get caught up on every little thing...I nearly died. I abandon it then and there and haven't looked back, although I sure wish it worked better.

Advice on another thread talked about bringing along a hoe, which...okay, but isn't the point to speed up transport of goods? Having to stop and hoe around a bit every couple minutes seems a little....it seems faster to just walk.

Any idea if its supposed to get any easier? Or if there's some kind of trick to it that I'm missing?

Carts work well if you build roads. On my starter island I have a Road that goes from one coast to the other. I have loaded it up with 1800 units and taken it across the island in a fairly short time frame. Carts in the bush don't work well.

I've noticed that the required surface flatness depends proportionally on the load of your cart.
For example, if your cart is slightly to medium loaded (im thinking in full stacks of ore) - you can pretty much pull it uphill even a steep path. If your cart is filled more than 3/4 - even the slightest bump wont let you move past it, the surface needs to be perfectly level and smooth.
I think this is an interesting mechanic of the game.
Source: i built a stone road between my main base on a hill and my dock and tried to bring in a cart fully loaded with silver & black metal ore (spoiler alert: it was almost immovable).

I like the cart. And being able to dodge roll to get out of it when SHTF is a life saver. I wish it came with its own map icon as I’ve misplaced some whilst roaming around either collecting wood or metal.
place a marker, i have lost my karve so now I drop a dot marker named karve delete it once I get it back :)
Sounds good in theory but whilst being chased by a troll, brutes and a gang of greydwarfs. Placing a map marker is the last thing on my mind.

I use it for stone/wood (for castle building) from the dark forest to the meadow (we have a road), and then I also use it for transporting from my dock to my smithy so I don't have to run back and forth a million times. It can carry a LOT more than I can.

Leave on road, run the bit out into the woods to gather an inventory full of mats, run to cart, dump, run back into woods -- I can generally fill a cart with stone or wood in less than an IC day, but would do a LOT less if I were having to run back and forth to the base instead of just between the trees and the road. When you get to the point where you're clear-cutting large swaths of black forest for what you're doing/building, the cart becomes invaluable. The ore from dock -> smithy is just an impatience issue on my part (it's not THAT far to my smithy) but it's handy all the same.

The cart is ok, but if you have to go upwards even with a hoe in your hand and lots of stamina its reeeeeeeeaaaaaaalllyyyy tiresome.

OK after making 14 (admittedly very short) trips unloading iron ore from my Longship I think carts are starting to look more appealing. I'm totally out of bronze atm though for the nails so I can procrastinate a bit more.

Cart is especially great in the swamp when going to all the crypts

i had to go back enough to repair my picks so i just dropped ore in chests, ported back to base and then resumed. boated stuff back after that.

i'm contemplating building a card and seeing how it handles going down the mountain while loaded with silver

Pack a little wood to build a workbench. When you flip the cart (and you) will build a workbench and quickly repair the cart and disassemble the workbench. Also bring a pick to dig under the cart to flip it back on it's wheels.

A buddy of mine built a ramp of 45 degree roofs down a mountain. It was a pain to get a really loaded cart of ore to start but once we started down it was very nice. You just can't steer anything that heavy while sliding so make sure your lined up in advance :).

I find the cart fun. Especially with an troll chasing you. It can lead to some exciting moments similar to the world's most silly police chases.

It also leads to bad decisions, like trying to pull it really fast between trees without taking time to make a proper road. It's comedy gold stuff.

I guess it kinda reminds me of growing up in upper Michigan, planning a a fun weekend with your friends, and getting stuck in the snow a few miles down the road. "Not again!", you all say. Then years later, it's a funny memory among friends.

A game with built in disasters-waiting-to-happen is good stuff. Hopefully they add more stuff like this to the game. It's even funnier with friends doing cart races for laughs.

It's too bad so many people's spines fell out. Not to mention sense of humor really taking a downturn. It's almost as though people forget it's a game, and think it's actual work.

Seriously, though. Play it as a game. Find the fun in things. If you can't have fun, don't bother playing.

I've used carts for silver mining with my mates. We loaded them up with 3 stacks of silver, each. This way, cart is very mobile, and we can easily make it even more mobile by taking 1 full stack of silver away from it(just in case some steep hill, or bumpy road appears). We managed to carry over 9 stacks of silver this way, on land, through Mountain, Meadows and a Black Forest.

Even when destroyed, carts are easily rebuilt. Stash is not lost. Even if you miss a troll and it destroys the cart - it takes around 20 seconds to set it back up again and continue on.

I don't get why you all would use a cart for wood since you can take wood through portals.
Its handy for collecting a forest full of wood. I chop trees until my axe breaks. Then I go fix my axe and pull the cart behind me as I break the fallen logs into planks. So Im filling the cart as I collect. Then take that heavy cart over to the portal (or base if its a planted forest) and xfer
