You can block a troll's attacks with a bronze shield no problem. Mine was level 2 (a single upgrade). Just don't use blunt against them. I was winning melee fights with trolls using a level 2 bronze axe in level 2 bronze armor before moving out of black forest.
Fun fact: If you not beaten any boss's yet, you can still get the fine wood bow by chopping down trees and rolling the logs into the birch trees that are 'too hard to cut' with a flint axe. Repeat and you can break the birch trees to get fine wood. Do this to a few trees and use it to make the fine wood bow. Insta upgrade.
Love how the theme of trolls is being maintained in this thread even though we are covering more and more subjects.
As for blunt, Frostner deals frost and spirit damage as well as blunt and that's why I said Frostner and not mace.
So, until later, bow and kiting is your best option.
