Valheim

8 crashes in a span of 3 hours - All gear lost. (Bit of a rant)
I've spent almost 30 hours on the game so far, and it has crashed non-stop all throughout the time I've played. It crashed a few times while simply running through the black forest, and almost always crashed when I'm sailing in the middle of the ocean (foreshadowing).

When the game crashes and I rejoin my friend's hosted world, I would simply revert back to the state I was in after resting in bed, and any map progress, resources, markers, and most importantly, any items picked up from the chest after your last save state would disappear permanently upon crashing.

To try to get to see if I could prevent further crashing, I took off all of my gear, tools, and weapons, and placed it in various chests out of fear of losing it all during another random crash, and decided to test any setting changes to see if the crashing would stop (changing resolution, playing windowed mode, changing frame-rate, lowering graphics, running as administrator, running in Vulkan, etc). At this time, I had rested in bed with very minimal items.

I've manged to successfully sail through the ocean ONE time after changing my settings from full screen to windowed mode, which gave me hope that maybe the game would no longer crash, and I could finally sail normally, or at least play the game normally.

So in my excitement that I could finally play the game normally, I decided to go gather all the gear that I painstakingly crafted (metal tools, weapons, upgraded armor, resources, etc.) in order to transport it across the water to another make-shift home that my friend and I relocated to.

I made the mistake of NOT resting in bed and saving the state prior to this, so as I sailed the ocean with all of the important gear that I had accumulated throughout the entirety of my game play, the game crashed, and I reverted back to the save state where I had practically no items.

All my gear, my valuables, upgrades, weapons, all gone. And the chest that I had taken them from is simply empty. Hollow. Void of any redemption. Like my soul.

Can I get an F in chat?

**EDIT:
I want to clarify that this is simply a discussion on my experience with the game in its current state. I am in no way berating the developers, or the game itself. I don't play games too often, but this game is good enough for me to put in some hours!

I'm simply sharing my experience, not asking for any sort of solution.

I do not encounter crashing issues with any other games. It just so happens to occur with this one, which makes sense since it is still in its early stages :)

are you playing with the vulkan api? stop running the game with vulkan, it crashes. non-vulkan hasnt crashed in 150 hours (ever) for me

also u can spawn everything back with console commands, or possibly even restore a old backup save

I've ran the game with and without using Vulkan. It crashes either way.

you can use the console commands to spawn raw materials so you can re-craft your gear to get you back to where you were pre-crash.

Easy fix.

Appreciate the solution. Though, it's not something that anyone should have to resort to.

There's plenty of reward in achieving something through organic game play. Once lost, that feeling of achievement is simply diminished. This post is mainly about the state of the game, and one player's experience, as opposed to being problem/solution-focused.

Had a few connectivity issues that required me to leave and reconnect to the dedicated server though.

That's terrific! What settings do you typically play on? And what are your specs?
Have you tried checking the windows event log to see which module is crashing? This can give a hint sometimes as to what might be causing it.

Same here a ton of hours and 0 crash with an AMD Ryzen 3600 paired with a good old GTX 1070 and 16GB memory.

While I am sorry for the loss of time you experienced you might want to try and see if there is something you can do on your hand to troubleshoot the issues you're having. Pretty sure there are a ton of video and forums posts on troubleshooting this game thanks to its success.

crashes are pretty uncommon (in non-vulkan mode) so its likely on your end, maybe update some drives or do a ddu fresh instal of em

It appears to have various faulting modules. A few being d3d11.dll, and UnityPlayer.dll in separate error logs. A good chunk of the errors just state that valheim.exe "stopped interacting with Windows and was closed."

Ok that's what I was wondering, if the module keeps changing or changing address it kind of leans towards RAM instability. Have you checked your temps during play? This game tends to run a tad hot ;)

I've played with many friends who have never experienced any crashes either - lucky them.

They all have a wide array of GPU's and CPU's: 1050ti's, 2070 Super, 1660's, AMD chips, Intel, etc.

I'm running on a Ryzen 5800X, and GTX 3080, 32GB Memory @ 3200Mhz. The game runs perfectly smooth absolutely maxed at 1440p. My hardware is perfectly capable of running the game. I've tinkered with quite a lot of settings and utilized a variety of troubleshooting methods.

It still leaves me scratching my head as to what other options I have left to fiddle with haha!

My temperatures are quite stable! CPU has not gotten higher than 72C, and GPU no higher than 63C. I've always monitored them closely.

1 crash in 190 hours here. Either you have some hardware issues, or your overclock is too high, or your OS/drivers aren't solid. Or.. perhaps you were trying to use the Vulkan implementation?

problem might come from 3080 drivers that are not mature enough while this card is more than capable of running this game I have no clue on how the driver situation looks like for 3080s due to how low the number of card owners really is....
Maybe try running a stress test to see if that picks anything up. There is a fee Asus ROG benchmark / stress test that is supposedly good for drawing out instability issues.
