I hate that it remembers the last build after putting it away. Would be nice if it remembered until you switched tools then reverted to 'repair' as the default.
Build a crafting table in cover. The simplest trick is to build off a roof off a tree and enclose the sides of the table with walls. Though, the simple trick of walls and a roof over the table works as well.
What do you mean by "repair tools"?
Do you mean things you carry in your inventory, like the hoe or hammer? For that you go to a workbench or forge of high enough level (depends on what kind of material something was made from) and click on the Hammer "tab" that sticks out from the side of the Craft/Upgrade box like a broken thumb. Each press completely repairs some damaged item in your inventory, but you don't get to choose which one. Just keep pressing it until everything damaged has been fixed.
EDIT: As others have pointed out above, said workbench or forge needs to be sufficiently covered (walls on three side and roof pieces overhead) to be able to access those functions.
