Do tamed boars revert to wild if you free them?
OK.. so I tamed 2 boars to explore that aspect of the early game. Soon, though, there was 8 or 9 of them including the little piggies. Not wanting to engage the increasing time-sink of feeding a small (but rapidly growing) hoard, nor, I discovered, the task of repeatedly killing anything that loves me (lol), I quickly decided to abandon boar farming by setting them all free except for one pet. Problem solved I thought. But no... it wasn't really.

Although the freed boars wandered away a little from their old pen (which was now closed to them preventing return) they still remained there - or there abouts. When I checked on them the next day to see if they had gone feral, or at least had fed themselves, I found that (a), they still loved me and (b), they were now hungry. At that point, being the animal lover that I am, I realise that I didn't like that combination at all despite the fact that they are 'just' digital creatures. I mean... watching them beam those little love hearts at me through their growing hunger roughed the ♥♥♥♥ out of my tough Viking bits, lol.

OK, I thought, they will get hungry for a bit as they wander, they're tough, they can take it. Then they'll finally find wild food as they go, and all's well that end's well, right? So, fingers crossed, I wait another game-day before checking on them again. They have spread out a little more - but still close by. They STILL loved me. And they were STILL hungry. Hmmm. Not good. Surely, I thought, they are not just going to wander about, always nearby, and slowly starve to death? Surely not? It surprised me a bit to discover just how much I didn't like that idea - at all. It saddened me (emotional engagement - well done Devs, lol).

Hence my post question. So, will my wild-tamed boars, and born in captivity tamed boars, finally start feeding themselves - but remain tame? Alternatively, will they start feeding themselves but revert to the wild self sufficient state? Or *choke* will they slowly starve to death - still loving me?

What do you think guys (and gals)? Anyone else felt the unexpected stab of that particular moral dilemma? Anyone know for sure how this situation plays out in game?

I've been raising my boars on a natural island with no added fencing beyond gates on the bridges, and the surrounding shoreline is slowly but steadily filling up with friendly pigs. I may need to arrange an annual cull for frame rate reasons.

I had tamed boars escape and many game days later, they were still roaming free as tamed boar.

Not positive, but it doesn't seem to wear off, once tamed.

Boars don't need to eat. They never starve to death. Feeding them is how you breed them, but they will wander free as 'tamed' boars until slain by a player or furling etc.

Ah! Thank you. Nice to know they don't starve :steamhappy:

Thank you for sharing this. So they go on breeding even when hungry then. I would have thought a rumbling belly worked a bit like a cold shower, lol. Will keep my eye out then for roaming little piggies :)

Good top know that not only do they not starve but, as you say, they remain tame as they roam free. I like that

They will only breed when fed. Other poster is simply feeding them on a 'free range' island.

I see. My bad. Thanks for the clarification. Must admit I like the idea of a free range island :)

Yeah, they mostly breed on the island but occasionally one gets spooked or adventurous enough to swim the channel. I've never seen a pigling on the shores but the slowly increasing population tells me no-one's starving to death.

This is a game, doubt they implemented such a complex system. Likely they won't die from hunger and remain taimed.

On the other hand night spawn monsters would kill them.

In my game they specifically targeted my boars. Had to put up walls around the pens just to protect them...

Thanks for that. Getting valued confirmation, such as yours, that freed tame boars don't starve to death restored my feel-good factor, lol. Heading out from my home base in whatever direction (wish the game had an onscreen compass) I still come across my freed boars and I always stop to toss them a raspberry. I'd never make a livestock farmer :) Thanks again!

A game, yes. But a survival based one. So, that inevitably had me wondering about the survival of the animal life too. Especially those one's that loved me, lol. To achieve immersion in a good movie involves the "willing suspension of disbelief" (as they say). Same applies, at least for me, with games I deem worthy of it; which Valheim surely is IMO. So, I put as much of "me" into the game as I can for maximum immersion. That includes the animal lover part of me too :)

Aye, I expected night spawn monsters to probably kill at least some of them. But hey, that's life in the wild right. And at least, to my way of thinking, they lived free and died free. That's a much better 'reality' from my immersion-driven gaming perspective.

Thank you for your valued contribution.
