IMHO you need at least 150 floorspace area where units are a 2x2 floor tile. Preferably this with 2 floors to double it, so you can spread out a bit more.
Alternately, if you have visions (or delusions) of grandeur, you can just put floor tiles up the walls and stuff forge and workbench addons up the walls instead of across the floor (bellows is picky, but the rest much less so) ... its ugly, but it works while you consider your big building project options and locations.
My main forge (with all the upgrades) is outside my house next to my smelter and other metal producing stations. This made it easy to have 1 section to easily store ore, produce plates and make stuff. But I hated popping in from a portal, running outside the house to the forge for repair work. I added a second forge on the inside of the house right against the wall with the main forge. If you position everything correctly, your second forge can gain all the upgrades as the original forge.
Having 2 forges serves double duty... you can rip break down and move the extra one to set up a mining operation or repair station somewhere and bring it back when done.
You can add a floor above too. Check my screenshots if you want and watch how the main base evolved. Bergaretxe aka my main base has gone through quite a lot of Feng Shui to be able to fit everything that I wanted inside. Many things that I dont really need occupying a lot of space, but it feels realistic to me, like the little gardeners shack between the farm and the beehives, or the massive meadhall/jars home to the left, and the other big building to the right which holds the guest room and a storage room, with the portal hub on top of it.
Gain Txiki/the Plains base workshop has been built from scratch as it is shown, with a dedicated little area for each table and its upgrades. The Adze and chopping block are outside the building(which makes sense too). Im in the process of finishing my Inca-style terrace farm for hops and flax, still lots to do before this base is where I want it hahah.
Sorry for the wall of text, I hope you can extract something useful at least :D
TLDR: Dont be afraid to scrap and rebuild, sometimes its faster than trying to fit everything and it will be more aesthetically pleasing(plus it can look more natural, if thats what youre after). Dont be afraid to grab more land, theres a lot of it in this game!
Whenever I start anew I want to make something a bit more ambitious. I overdo it. May not finish it. Even if I do I might not make that sentimental connection that I had with the original base, and ultimately don't make much use of it. Might even be glad to see the back of it.
You might not be like me though.

I also just really like building new bases. I think you will need a new base for sure after the 4th boss because of plains farming
It's kind of cool seeing your footprint expand, and building more structures and crafting areas. Not to mention the amount of refurbished homesteads with fires and deerskin rugs all over the place.
Once you get up to plains you can facetank all lower biomes, gather whatever materials you want to focus on, farm, and maintain livestock easily. Find some locations you like and build new there, while expanding your "main base" as your preference (and if they add more crafting in H&H update). I have various levels of construction quality in different biomes on a lot of different islands. Until there's more to do, I'm content with harvesting resources and building bases in new lands. I'm focused on having accessibility to resources, knowing the water routes, and want to have a good location for access to the Mistlands when those get populated. Otherwise, I'd just start a new seed and end up building new anyway.
