Structure integrity
Hello, im having problem when building my house next to the water connecting a dock. I have supported the bottom of the structure with core wood poles and reinforced everywhere i can with wood beams, but when i get to the 2nd tier the roof and all supports go red and i can for the life of me understand why. It starts green then turns red in around 5secs then breaks. It wont upload screenshots so i cant show you. Any help would be appreciated

I made a quick diagram to explain it since the same question is asked all the time.

Your pieces start green then go red and break as the game works out the support for that freshly placed piece.

I did exactly that but still have no effect its probably something else

You will get better building materials over time. Plain wood builds things similar to hut or garage size homes. You can expand these by building the inside on a pillar-supported grid. Core Wood is the next upgrade and supplies support for 4M spans. If you haven't done so, take your flint axe, find some Black Forrest, and cut down some of those really tall Pine trees that don't have any branches on their bottom half. That'll move you to Core Wood construction.
Edit: Ignore the Core wood reference. Didn't realize you already unlocked it.

I've got bronze gear atm I went and got loads of core wood, added it to the 2nd teir support structure and it was having none of it. I'll have to have a play around because somethings not right

You should be able to stack 4 of the long core wood logs end-to-end and build really tall. Make sure the bottom one is in the ground (blue) and not attached to a floor instead (will be green instead).

EDIT - With wood you're limited by how many pieces from the ground you can go (4-5 I forget). The big core-wood logs count as one piece but are 2 pieces long.

Building near or into the water is best done with a stoneplate foundation. You can stack stoneplates from the bottom of the water until the stack reaches above the water.

Also Note: Vertical counts as one piece, straight horizontal counts as one piece, horizontal diagonal counts as 2 pieces.
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
1 to 7 counts as two horizontal span pieces.
1 to 9 counts as 4 horizontal span pieces.
You can span further by building a pillar on the other side of 9 somewhere and building from both pillars toward each other.

A rock can't become foundation.

You won't likely get much into multiple level builds until you unlock iron and stone block.

You need "iron wood". You get it once you get iron.

Wood Iron Posts/Beams are the answer. You can also use the Shift key to clip Iron Gates into the center of Stone Walls to reinforce them without seeing the Wood Iron Posts. This will allow you to go ~42M tall. Core Logs (the 4M ones) without support can only reliably make it 4 high. However, when the Core Logs are IN water (not rain) that is reduced some but I've been able to build a Dock all the way out until the Map changed to "Ocean" Biome and the supports at that point were 4 high.
