Is it faster than the Karve?

ok thanks

Not really. It's harder to turn and to steer through small spaces with about the same speed I think. What it has going for it are much better durability and inventory space.

If you want to be faster on the seas killing a certain boss will help with that.

Since I play solo I was wondering if I needed the longboat...if its not alot faster than its not worth it for me.
EDIT: Well I guess I'll build it just for the lolz

I consider the longboat a transport ship. Everything else is done with Karve.

I'm in the same boat ;-) I have built both a Karve and Longboat and feel the longboat is useful for exploring and shipping ore. You can stuff so much more within the hold which is useful. It maneuvers more like a beached whale however.

Yes really. It is faster. By quite a margin. And yes it's bigger, so it won't fit in places where the Karve could, but that was not OPs question. In terms of speed, yes, faster.

I play solo only and use it. Having a boat that doesn't sink as fast and provides more inventory space than you'll ever need is useful. The only thing it really is a lot worse at than the Karve is sailing in confined spaces and turning near the coast.

If that is so I haven't noticed it at all when I upgraded.

Edit:
According to the wiki:

Karve:
50% intensity - 20 km/h
100% intensity - 24.5 km/h
Longship:
50% intensity - 27 km/h
100% intensity - 33.5 km/h

https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Longship

So yeah Longship is faster and I stand corrected.

I didn't think it was much faster, but according to the wiki it's a little over 1/3 faster at full speed. But more importantly, it's got twice the HP and 18 storage slots.

Idk if the higher top speed is worth the more cumbersome low speed navigating for you, or if you don't need that much extra storage.

The longboat protects you better: dethskeeters & archery from the enemy hit the boat, not you. Its wider, so you can shoot from it a little better IMHO without risking hitting your own ship (karve issue). It has a much larger storage. It has more hit points. Its notably faster at full sail with tailwind. You can get into it from both sides. The karve risks less useful materials if lost, and is better in some small rivers. All 3 ships serve useful purposes, the raft is disposable and makes a better fishing platform.

be cool if they add hook points to build a few small things on the bigger boats. Like able to put a workbench and a fire pit with cooking station, or a couple additional chests for bigger moves

It's roughly 25% faster, it just does not feel that way cause it's 2.5x bigger so "feels" slower when you see it in motion.

Easier to solo sea monsters too, cause you have more room to move without risking falling and it has more HP overall
