Better to build a moat or a wooden fence?
Thoughts?

Honestly, It's a question of what you're after. Do you want to defend your base and have a pretty aesthetic that you sometimes need to repair- Or do you want your base to be essentially untouchable by enemies?

If the former, Walls/Fencing. If the latter, Moat.

It's worth noting though that enemy raids (Like 'The Forest is Moving') Actively target and pursue the player with no regard for the base- They'll only attack the base if the player is inside or if the base directly obstructs them from reaching you.

Problem is digging moat will cause fps drops.

Thats why i started from scratch on a island with naturally low amount of instances
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2426363757

and make my base in a way i produce so few instances as possible

my first island i thought it would be my masterpiece sadly screwed me

(Thats a negative spike at the fps, but still)

a wooden fence (or even 2x tall stone wall) will be more than enough for dwarves, swamp folk and skellingtons if you hunker down and keep repairing it, but stopping Trolls will take a moat, and a pretty deep one with almost vertical walls.

also, planting an entire forest's worth of wooden poles with troll heads on em all around the base has proven ineffective at discouraging them :(

why not both?

Why a fence at all.
get the mod that silence the tamed wolfes and a army of wolfes. You will not even perceive that there was a attack,.... well you will wonder about the troll tropys liing arround.

Little Island with a few buried workbench to keep it clean, not a single raid, working also with drakes.

Raise a rock 'wall' and the enemy can't damage it nor climb it.

depends on the size of the moat

I watched those spiked barricads bring a troll down to half life before it was killed by my wood arrows.

Both?

A dirtwall is secure, a 1 x 1 moat 4 steps deep is the same. Just build a 4 step deep cliff around your base, you do not have to flatten the terrain. A small wall or moat is enough. A wooden fence does not protect you at all.

You could place a fancy wood palisade on your wall and a small moat before the wall, so your camp looks like a cool and practical roman encamptment.

You can use 4 doors inside your moat as a easy drawbridge. Close the doors you can walk on them or a cart over it. Open the doors to prevent enemies from entering your base.

I think moats and fences are useless in the Meadows as the only thing that will come wondering in unannounced is Greylings and Dwarfs if you’re too close to the Black Forrest.

When the event trigger its best to vacate your base and fight them away from buildings as the ads are programmed to attack the player.

The air attacks from the mountains however, are a different kettle of fish. No matter the height of your wall the width of your moat them things are airborn. So if you’re out in the open, the only thing to save your base is you getting out of there but staying warm at the same time could prove challenging without the right preparation.

I put fires in building to deter boars, greys and dwarfs. Fences off crops and bees the best I could.

I’ve tried a moat and didn’t like the performance hit. Done palisades and didn’t like that the dear stopped spawning near by.

If my stuff get damaged I just repair it. It’s my loot that I’m more worried about so I’ve triple walled my loot room. I discovered this whilst building using the small hobbit door. Putting one down gives you 3 snap points. Can be removed and replaced with a gate. The rooms not particularly lager so didn’t cost me too much in labour. But my minds at ease
