I feel like this might be pacing things a little *too* fast.

TL;DR Version: There should NOT be swarms of trolls as base attacks UNTIL THE PLAYER HAS ACCESS TO BUILDING STONE WALLS. Draugr and skeletons I can deal with. Trolls coming in pairs when everything I've done for all these hours is still made of wood is STOOPID.

So I've been enjoying building in Valheim a lot, and after finding so many worn down stone towers and such, wanted a chance to make some stone buildings of my own. As such, I've been trying to get the swamp key, find the dungeon and get the ore that will allow me to make the stone cutter and let me start building with stone.

But seems like the game is jumping the gun a little.

Today as I logged in to try exploring more into the swamp a bit, I saw "The Ground Starts Shaking". At first I thought it was from something else; maybe some random event? Then the trolls started smashing my walls down and breaking in. Swarms of trolls. BEFORE I EVEN HAVE THE ABILITY TO MAKE STONE WALLS. Think about that for a moment.

I would be fine with them if there were some way to build stronger wooden barricades. Or if trolls didn't just smash through everything in range and screw HP or durability of the items between them and where their swing says they're hitting. Luckily for me, I had made a full ring wall with plenty of space between it and my house, or they would have smashed a giant hole in the side of it, probably casually destroying literally over a hundred hours of work and careful collecting.

When the Draugr started appearing and sniped me down with arrows, that was one thing (I mean, really. These guys are accurate to a degree that seems... unlikely). I could handle just not being savvy enough to dodge, or being forced to retreat inside after running back with a hastily made hammer to repair the doors til they went away. That was actually cool in it's own fashion, since it had a fun horror feel to it... zombies bashing your doors while you frantically try to keep them out. But f'n TROLLS?!

What would I be able to do about trolls before I had a stone battlement in place? Exactly what I *did* do... nothing. I was FORCED TO RUN OUT AND RISK BEING SMASHED AS A DEFENSE! That's NOT how defense works. You don't charge into heavy machine gun fire to protect yourself from the bullets. And said bullets shouldn't be able to pass through everything on their way to you either.

If walls are a thing in this game, and stages need to be passed in order to survive certain events, then those events have to have some degree of balance. I haven't had any real problem with the difficulty up until now. But if I'm basically going to be able to be chased out into the open to HOPE I don't die whenever one of these attacks happen, then what was the point of building anything at all? Am I now forced to build all my homes as holes in the ground until I MAYBE luck out and gain the ability to make iron? Assuming trolls don't approach and destroy my ore processing setup?

I remember looking at Bronze arrows and thinking, "Wow, what a waste of bronze! You have to dig tin, then copper, while being attacked the entire time, then smelt it, then combine it, then craft arrows just to lose them permanently! Insane!" ...Now I'm crafting them and wasting bronze, while even as I do so, I have to worry that I'm not being fast enough and here come the trolls again to destroy everything I've worked for and worse...

... just kinda ignore it as they plow through, destroying my beautiful creations. Maybe this doesn't mean anything to the people just looking for fights and whatnot, but for me, who's main enjoyment has been crafting stuff and base building, this really messed with my head. I logged out of the game I was playing just to vent this so I wouldn't want to avoid playing until something changed, cause there's no way I can know IF something will change.

First, I *did* kill the Elder. You don't get access to iron just by killing him, you have to go into the Swamp to find that dungeon that has the piles with the metal in them. If I'm wrong on that, PLEASE let me know where else iron can be had easily. I've not seen an iron deposit anywhere.

I did it when I had level 3 troll armor and used fire arrows from range. I used a trick I figured out from a video I watched; I dug a trench around his spawn platform so he couldn't get off of it, then just dodged his root spawns.

I haven't mentioned it to you, but my map is one of those 'fun' maps. most of it is Meadows, with patches of Black Forest and Mountains. So far I've found two Swamp biomes, both small and beyond my current ability to enter for any period of time, so I can't even begin searching for the dungeon with the scrap iron in it to smelt. I'm currently working on changing that.

So far I'm up to FIVE Troll Invasions. Each one having no less than three, and up to five trolls in each one, so... not sure where you're getting that idea from. Pretty sure from others comments and my own experiences that they can happen at any time after you've killed both the Elder and some trolls, and I've killed many trolls.

I kinda mainly enjoy this game for it's building so no... I don't have a 'minecraft dirt hut', and no, I wasn't AFK when this happened. I was crafting food inside my house and doing basic main base stuff like making more coal for my smelter. Had no idea what was going on and went to look around and by that time saw a troll already in mid swing on my walls.

I have to admit I'm not really enjoying these 'Ur jus' a stupid player!' posts people keep dropping, but I'll keep replying to them for a while longer. I've already gotten the answers and ideas I wanted, and am already moving along with my game.

From what I understand, they can compound one another. May also be possible to have remnants of prior raid waves, or are they hard-coded to despawn? Such as the BF nightly reinforcements. Also say 1-2(trolls) were on the move to nearer your position, either aggro'd by your passing, or witnessing a separate engagement. And you have triggered a 'groundshaking' already, I do not know if while defending from a troll raid, it does not in fact worsen the problem. If more trolls attack you because they die, and more are making it to you to attack, it creates an perpetual cycle. Which would be unfortunate, and bad. Compounding issues all around.
You may have simply pushed several raid 'timers', 'triggers' at once, stacking the effects. Is it possible that a nearby spawner is boosting numbers inadvertently? Investigate any sources you may suspect. Lay off sniping big troll heads for a bit? Lastly consider collapsing, or at least retreating from this particular instance. Consider creating a more central citadel version, secure the world spawn. You may have hit a wall in this particular instance. If raids are ramped-up, and the repercussions are even more severe, it may be time to reconsider the options. Possibly consolidate elsewhere
Would you like the opportunity to start fresh on the seed you know already, knowing what you know now? I believe is the correct conversation to have. Consider adopting some plans for similar situation. And how you want them to be handled. Instancing wisely is worthy of utilization. To be sure, the game is brutal and unforgiving, the learning curve may be steep, in ways. But, many people have walked those footsteps already, successfully.

Yes. You get access to iron by killing the Elder. That's the gate stopping you from getting iron. You need to kill the Elder to get the swamp key. Literally nothing else was stopping you getting iron, apart from your unwillingness to explore to find a swamp dungeon. And up until that point you would have experienced raids, so you blaming the game for your inattentiveness is still a case of "Ur just a stupid player!" So, the only things I was wrong on was you being afk and lazy. I'm ok with that, are you?

I can confirm that you can get them BEFORE killing the Elder. It may have something to due with my full suit of Troll Armor, Mejinjord and such, I hear there are flags for different things that alter what raids come and when.

I've heard of a way to make it so technically you can do it so you never have a raid. It's a PITA and needs a fresh world, but it's possible.

Easy solution to your /my own problem. Kite them away from your base. I have yet to have more then just the trolls so as long as you have more then one exit Or a jump out point you can convince them to chase you and leave your home alone

I can confirm that you can get them BEFORE killing the Elder. It may have something to due with my full suit of Troll Armor, Mejinjord and such, I hear there are flags for different things that alter what raids come and when.

I've heard of a way to make it so technically you can do it so you never have a raid. It's a PITA and needs a fresh world, but it's possible.

Also, I didn't lose a single structure on either of two Troll raids I had on my main base. Just run around in the red circle until the raid timer runs out (can't remember what it is), then kill the few that showed up initially. You should only ever have to kill 2 Trolls. (The timer does not run out if you're not in the red circle, stay in it. The raid will stay dormant if you leave it)

I did the tests yesterday.

I had two Troll raids prior to killing the Elder. (Three total raids, one was Greydwarves)
One was prior to him being spawned in, the other was after I died once to him and was in my base crafting some new gear.

Not sure what to tell you.
