How does multiplayer work?
Title says it all. Can you freely join others' servers or something like that? Does it have matchmaking system? Etc.

Due to the way the world progresses, it's frankly a bad idea to join random servers. Play solo or play (together) with a select group of friends in a coordinated game. I actually think that "join randos in a public server" should not be an option because the game doesn't support it well and it can pretty easily ruin the game for you.

Basically the game has some random base attacks (and, later, basically assassination attempts on your person) that are unlocked as someone (anyone) hits certain milestones in the game. You could join a random server that has already finished the last boss and now you're getting attacked by plains goblins out of nowhere at random because that's what stage the game is on, even though YOU are solo and new.

There's also lots of griefer potential. In summary, don't join random servers. This is a solo / cooperation-with-friends game, not a random server join game.

Either p2p or servers, like 7 days to die.

You can join another players world if they select the option when they start their game. Up to 10 players. You can create a dedicated server where up to 10 people can play together on a persistent world. The first requires the host to be online the later does not. Both require a world name and password to join.

So there are no public servers aka P2P or whatever? All worlds require password?

Is there system/feature where you are automatically placed in some world with another players?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

If you are interested in playing with randoms you can also go to the Looking for group forums.

how would you go about creating a persistent server that you and friends could all play on at your leisure, without requiring the "host player" at all times?

We used this guide. pretty easy. Friend had a separate box we could use on a good connection.

It requires multiple players. The rest is magic.

For sure, have some fun . It's good times with a couple friends. Research as little as possible for the best experience. Lots of fun surprises!
