Renewable vs Non-Renewable Resources (Light Spoilers)
Something i felt needed discussing. With dungeons like crypts and burial chambers being a one time run, one might begin to wonder "what happens when i exhaust all these points?"

There are small scrap piles hidden in the swamp but resources like metals have a limit in each seed. Silver/Copper/Tin/Obsidian dont just grow back, Iron is in the same boat, once the crypts are raided your options are limited. Black metal is the exception, as fulings spawn as a primary enemy in the plains.

With the game being unfinished, there is room to work with. Future enemies could have rare chances to drop ore, but for now im just looking to catalog peoples ideas and thoughts about this as well as other items.

For example, the forums have almost no info on fuling totems, and without disecting the game code its difficult to tell if they respawn or not. If someone has any info it would be much appreciated.

Theres also issues like using all the flax/barley before growing more, as nothing drops those from what ive seen. Thistle thankfully respawns after a while, dragon eggs do as well. I noticed withered bones are limited but you get so many regardless you're sick of looking at them. Considering they are boss spawning materials this could be problematic for a long term server.

Post your thoughts, my hope is that future content will make these farmable in some fashion, we will see. (whatever the next update brings, i cant wait :cs_viking:)

Like I said in the other thread, fuling totems drop from fuling berserkers which are technically infinite in supply in a world until Yagluth is defeated, even though in practice the fuling attack event may come up rarely. They otherwise don't respawn.

Iron is fully renewable because oozers drop scrap metal, but I doubt anyone could be bothered farming oozers for iron when they could just start a new world and grab up all the iron there instead.

This game, like Terraria, is really not designed with long-term high-population persistent servers in mind. Since players can just go harvest nonrenewable resources from a new world, that is what you can expect them to do once things begin to dry up in their old world.

Well i want to see just one guy that managed to exhaust his worlds ore spawns.... and even if you manage to do it you can start a new seed and mine everything from over there.

There are already collections with seeds that have awesome ore spans or swamps with ridiculous amounts of crypts etc.

So once Yagluth is defeated, you cant farm them anymore, which really kills the idea of farming it in the first place. That still doesnt answer if totems respawn.

400+ hours and ive never once seen an oozer drop scrap metal

This isnt even long term, me and 4 others have had a server running for 2 weeks and we already went through 1000+ iron between building and equips. 30+ crypts raided.

Keep in mind the game still has 3 unfinished biomes on top of that for us to deal with later. Does it really sound like its going to last?

I can see this sounding unreasonable if you play solo but a server full of thirsty players snaps up metal faster than the average magnet. We arent even a full crew of 10

An average world seed can have hundreds of sunken crypts, which should be enough for every player on a populated server to build massive iron supported fortresses. Some travel and exploration may be required, though... but I think that's a GOOD thing!

Even so, in addition to world hopping I really wouldn't mind seeing alternative methods such as the trader (possibly even a different trader) offering resources for sale or barter.

I didn't say the nonrenewable resources in a given world would be plenty for 10 people playing independently. I don't think they would. But as long as players can freely transfer their characters between worlds it arguably doesn't matter much, because they'll go plunder a different world for resources if scarcity becomes an issue regardless.

Its like real life, resources are finite. We have become so used to always want more that we now expect it in everything. This is a video game where each world has a start and an end, defeat all bosses the game is over. How you get there and how you want to spend the resources on the road to Valhalla is up to you, you want to waste all the iron in the world on metal beams to make pretty structures, sure knock yourself out. Does that mean the resources should be infinite? Ofcourse not, you could have made armor and weapons with them but you built houses instead.

I'm looking for a solution, not for someone to decide if this is a worthy problem or not. And before you pass judgement on others know what you're talking about - only one structure has wood iron beams. If you dont want to discuss it why post here?

You arent looking for a solution, you are looking for a problem and then deny anyone to disagree to your point of view. Thats not a discussion

You brought empty rhetoric about the world being finite and and your solution was basically "deal with it". But im the one trying to disagree with you? i dont remember wandering into your thread, nor do i deny your right to be here. but you could at the very LEAST add something constructive

On the other hand im open to ideas. Is there a console command that resets the seed but leaves built structures intact? Even if it buries them i wouldnt be upset about that. Anything that ensures a more infinite playstyle would be appreciated. Perhaps you could point me towards a mod?

The obvious solution is to raid other seeds for non-renewable resources.

(Surting Cores are renewable, they drop from the little fire mobs that can appear near flame vents in the swamp.)

Even better still, you can head to the Ashlands, aka, "Land of Surtlings and Little Else"

That said, i was really hoping i wouldnt have to go seed hoping, That was really a last resort

Any idea what the % rate is? If not thats alright im just really curious now
Ptolemy May 26, 2021 @ 10:47am
Not sure. Seems low, but I've gotten several pieces of scrap metal from oozers. They spawn so infrequently in the first place though that I cannot imagine using them as an actual iron source.
Afro Moose May 26, 2021 @ 10:51am
Those were my thoughts too. I can still count oozer kills in the dozens, as opposed to some others (im looking at you, Skeleton Surprise).

That reminds me. Trophies, do oozer's have one or is it just blobs? Also, since burial chambers dont refresh doesnt that make a ghost trophy one of the rarest in the game so far? ive yet to get my hands on one and ive been told every mob drops one
Ptolemy May 26, 2021 @ 10:55am
There's no item ID for either oozer or ghost trophies, so I assume they don't exist.

Well that solves that then, thank you. Won't have to search for those. i think im only missing a berserker head assuming there is one. wraith and golem trophies are pretty spiffy looking, im quite fond of those
Amos May 26, 2021 @ 11:00am
Ooze iron drop chance is 33%. There is no ghost trophy, ghosts never drop anything.
