Playing Solo
I just want to say that it's taken me 75 hours to awaken Bonemass, by myself.
Many many frustrations along the way. A lot of wasted time going to collect stuff when dead. I also had to sail halfway down the map from the center.
You know, I played through Dark Souls 1-3, but the going back to collect your stuff in this game is next-level BS.

I take it that the bosses are supposed to be done in a teams. I only managed to kill the elder with arrows when he got stuck and couldn't see me (took about 100+ arrows).
Bonemass is going to require a big hammer I take it, or I'm going to have to get him to the edge of cliff on the edge of a biome and arrow him to death too? I have maxxed out my iron armour, and have a bronze mace which does stuff all damage, plus he regens faster than I can even hurt him.

Freaking minecraft is more unforgiving about inventory loss than valheim is.

True, but you don't have things destroying your portals at least - meaning that even your best laid plans aren't going to get screwed up by a tough enemy wrecking your portal.

Equipment loss in Valheim is disastrous (takes SO MUCH effort to mine, ship the stuff halfway across the map because you can't bring it through a portal, then build forge, and upgrade equipment).
Whereas for minecraft, not quite so disastrous if you lose gear.

I've literally never had an enemy destroy a portal. Do you leave them out in the open or something?

It's really not that difficult solo. I beat Bonemass I believe 40 hours in?, just beat Modder cause I had everything maxed and wanted to move forward. (70hrs~?)

Not saying you didn't do what you said but I found Moder terribly tedious and hard to beat solo. I saw a few videos after I failed the first time but they were all in groups, did it before the new update or didn't get any add spawns.
I had a *really* hard time with the adds, beating a spike arm golem combined with a 1-star wolf at the same time as trying to dodge Moders attacks. In my seed, Moder spawned in a really bad spot too and never landed in a place where I could actually melee her (some terraforming fixed that for attempt 2 though).
About 25 minutes into the fight, my bow needed repairs and I had to bail out.

For me at least, this was a really hard fight solo so GG you guys who did it solo without cheesing.

This thread makes me dizzy, lmao. Getting Frostner before Bonemass? What is this, Link's Awakening? You guys don't know why the game is compared to Dark Souls?

OP, just upgrade all your stuff as much as you can before fighting him. I recommend either maxed out troll armor or iron obviously, a maxed out iron shield and maxed out iron mace. Eat sausages, turnip stew, and black soup. Chug your poison resist potions, have health potions on standby, and lure Bonemass up onto a patch of decent land. Parry every attack you can and kill every add that spawns in as it spawns in. There's no special secret or anything, the game just wants you to grind until you can make it. That's all the game ever wanted.

If you've had problems getting enough iron, it's because your swamps are poor. Find a swamp with 6+ crypts all together in one location, I assure you such a swamp exists somewhere in your world, you just have to (boringly) find it.

Do you realize you can upgrade your armor by 20 at this point without sacrificing any movement speed?

Why does it seem like no one has played this game before?

Yep. Why not? Handy for a quick escape when a seaserpent pushes me to go ashore on the plains which seem to be everywhere. I have to try to avoid them or deathsquitos get me.

Maybe I just have an absolutely evil map. Probably serves me right as the seed contains two swear words.
I started off on a massive island of black forest and meadow, and everything else is a ballache to get to.

Trying to find sunken caverns in the swamp was possible, but it's so damn far away from my starting point it takes forever to get there. The fact that people like to find map seeds with all biomes closeby tells me that the map is either too big, or boats too slow.

Mountains? I see them. Just haven't climbed them yet. Still doing the swamp.
I take it that some of you are doing the mountains and then the swamp boss?

Some people go to the mountains first to make frost arrows for Bonemass. But in order to get Frostner as someone suggested you need to either beat Bonemass first, be incredibly lucky in finding silver or be ready to chop the entire mountain to pieces at random.

I have been excessively using portals, but boy oh boy did I want to smash the screen when a denizen of the plains decided to destroy my portal. That really sucked! I had to sail all the way back again (took about 30 minutes)

Did you just put up a portal in the open? That's a last-case emergency move. It doesn't take a lot of wood to build a 3x3 shack that will hold a portal and a workbench. I've never had a mob get into one of my shacks...ah, no, one time a troll got me coming out of the shack and it got destroyed in the fight. But they've never been destroyed when they were just sitting idle.

or just raise a soil pillar (alike 2x2 floor tiles)
If its high enough not even trolls can destroy the Teleporter on top

No that's not true you can do it all by yourself the difficulty is adjusted based on how many players are playing.
https://youtu.be/7dz1rsZntDs
https://youtu.be/vmTnJD4_b00
https://youtu.be/sHu0NuBBuCk

by the time you can go sail with Kave I think you already have enough materials to build a portal also I don't think it's hard to gather the materials actually it's pretty easy, so my advice for you is always building a portal connected to your base or home as soon as you landed on the island so even if you died there you don't have to build another boat and sail back to collect your stuff.
also don't forget to barricade or protect your portal from mobs, otherwise, it has a chance to get destroyed by mobs and you can't go back there using that portal.

Bonemass is soloable without much issue. IF you are properly prepared. If not then you need to learn from your mistakes and it can be difficult.

Ohh, then I might have been lucky. I summoned Moder on a tall mountain, and it was just me vs him 1vs1. I think only one skeleton once came out of nowhere.

I just walked around + arrows, barrel roll his ice attack, then on the ground parry > attack. I must have been fortunate then

Monsters killed my Portals about 4 times lol (Twice on the spawning animation). Can be annoying for sure.

I've seen videos with people having no adds but also read about others saying they had my experience (golem + 1 star wolf spawn as adds). That really made the fight super hard for me since you are bound to either stagger from successive attacks or miss a dogde here and there when you can't keep track of all of them at once. I'm going to have a go at it again to see if I can beat her proper this time and hope I get your experience :)

Not being hit > being hit for less, sure.
But fully upgraded padded armor and shield turns a furby spear or a squito dive bomb into a dink on par with a greyling when you spawn into your world the first time naked. If you mess up in troll armor, you take a big hit, may even die, and avoiding all attacks from groups larger than 3 can be very challenging in the plains. Its not a trap, it does what it does: you can take bigger hits more often without risk of death. And non-plains enemy... are almost completely neutered. I could go get fast food and come back and eat it while standing in a large dwarf horde and still be near max health with I got back.

As far as solo and bosses go, prep really helps. I made a little ring of raised terrain with a narrow entry and fought bonemass there where his 50 summoned goons could not get at me, and just went toe to toe until he was done. My first time, I got killed and finished him with a fully upgraded club that I made in a hurry before portaling back. The second time I cut him down fast with mountain level gear to get his trophy for a decoration.

I defeated Bonemass 2 days ago, solo, the fight wasn't all that hard but I was also fully kitted in Iron armor, Iron Mace and Banded shield max upgraded, with poison resist and hp potions and the best food I could get at that point. It felt like I was OVERprepared for the fight.

Now that is over i'm running around in Troll Armor again as the movement speed is a must-have for exploring and mining. The only place I wouldn't recommend Troll armor is boss fights (obviously) and the Plains.. that is just a death sentence. Also the mountains sometimes, but only if you are in the night with 3 or more Wolfs chasing you.

Don't know why people always complain about "having to move for so long after deaths". From the moment I had portals unlocked (this was early Bronze Age) I would put them literally everywhere lol. Takes so little effort to build them. Since you need the Surtling Cores for making Smelters and Charcoal makers anyway just go into every Burial Chambers that you find and they are plentiful in the world.

Edit:

What I did was making Frost resist potions and explore the Mountains before Bonemass for the Obsidian and Frost Arrows. Having those 2 arrow types as a standard makes your life so much easier in the game. I couldn't find any Silver before the fight though sadly.

Here’s what I used to kill bonemass solo (this was like back in March/April but it should still work, don’t think I went under half hp)

Level 3 iron mace (probably most important item)

Iron armor and shield (think it was at least level 2)

Iron sledge (level 2, almost exclusively for 1 shotting the skeletons and blobs he summons)

Poison potions (Obvious)

Health potions (Useful if you take a big hit by mistake)

I didn’t take stamina potions but with the new update you might want to

Don’t need a bow or arrows, they do nothing to him

The last thing you wanna do before fighting him is try and fill in any little creeks and ponds around the area so you can move without being slowed by water

Parrying his slap attack is also a good idea as it makes you deal double damage, although if you can’t parry just roll away from it

As for food take sausages and turnip stew with the last item being whatever you want (preferably hp item)

Hate to be that guy but you need to adjust how you are playing, the issue is mostly your own by the sounds of it, some minor game issues don't help though.
I have solo'd all the content other than the last boss and not cheesed anything, no mods or commands. I died a few times in awkward places but had plans in place like safe houses and portals and always had spare equipment and useables ready to go.

Bonemass was really easy, but as you haven't been in the mountains yet you won't know why, you'll want to use frost arrows against him and all you have to do is keep moving around in a circle around his sacrificial well and he'll never hit you, when he throws the spawns its got an obvious wind up so ditch the bow and run to the spot where the mobs spawn to pre empt them before they do anything, I did this with a lvl3 bronze mace and the 2nd bow, its all in the arrows, the timing, and not blowing through all your stamina, poison resistance is a must just in case and I was in troll leather, as I was when I first started exploiting the plains.

Games got some sucky moments but if all you're doing is half assing around and throwing random open air portals around then you're doing it to yourself, build actual safe houses, change the terrain around you which is particularly helpful in the swamp, treat it like a 4x game in terms of forward planning. I have a base in the swamp for resources and a longboat to ferry them, same in the plains for farming flax and barley and the mobs in the biome, same as mountain and I have a main production base central to these outposts I make with a safe portal hub that contains my fast travel to all the locations in a fully safe way.

If/when I die its a simple task of my fast travel network, back up supplies and understanding/bothering to learn how the things in game work, you can too
