Though ye death runs could do with a little work, even if you are lucky and built a portal nearby it can still be super hard to get your stuff back depending on what killed you. I'm starting to just chain portals together into a huge jumbled mass so I always have 1 close to where I am currently.
It is totally possible to beat all the bosses solo, without cheats or mods...
Also, the boss difficulty ramps up according to how many players are in the area, so if you decide to team up with someone(s), the boss will actually be a lot tougher, with more hit points, the more people involved.
It's not required, but it is certainly helpful to place portals whenever you are going to sail far away, especially to other islands, that way when you die, it's easier to get your stuff back.
Elder is not that hard to kill... just like all the "grey" mobs, they are all made of wood, including Elder, so use fire arrows on him. Use the corner pillars to block the incoming vine attacks, run to the next pillar when he summons the roots, and shoot fire arrows at every opportunity.
Bonemass, (as well as most swamp mobs), are weak vs. blunt, and again, easy if you run in and attack with blunt weapons, watch for "windup" (meaning he's about to attack), run back out of the way, then run back in and attack between his attacks... bring poison resist mead.
With every boss fight, it's best to fully clear the area of all other mobs before summoning the boss, and make whatever terrain changes you need, beforehand ( such as raising the ground all around Bonemass altar, to get rid of all the water puddles in the whole general area... prevents leeches etc.)
Have you played it? If so, you'll probably recognise a lot of the same game mechanics in Valheim.
No, it's normal for most sandbox survival games. Freaking minecraft is more unforgiving about inventory loss than valheim is.
True, but you don't have things destroying your portals at least - meaning that even your best laid plans aren't going to get screwed up by a tough enemy wrecking your portal.
Equipment loss in Valheim is disastrous (takes SO MUCH effort to mine, ship the stuff halfway across the map because you can't bring it through a portal, then build forge, and upgrade equipment).
Whereas for minecraft, not quite so disastrous if you lose gear.
These bosses are also easy to cheese tbh. Bonemass, build a treehouse and stay there with poison potions. Make 200 frost arrows, stay behind a tree that fell down, he'll just stay there.
Next boss was even easier. Dying on a boat over on the next island is hell in the beginning I agree (So is the boat in general lol). But once you'll beat those moments, you'll feel even better about yourself.
Not sure that you can argue that the game is fine to play solo if you have to exploit the AI to do so. But if that's how you enjoy playing the game... each to their own.
I play solo and, as others have said, careful preparation has paid off. Any deaths I've suffered have been from recklessness... and I can't fault the game for that.
Mine Bronze to get Forge,Workbench and Cauldron upgrades, make Tier 1 Bronze armor or skip for fully Tiered Troll Armor. Make your Bronze Tools, go to the swamp for some Iron and Ancient Wood, then head for the mountains for that silver and Wolf taming. Then back to swamp. The only Armor, Weapons and Tools I fully upgrade atm is Plains stuff. Everything else seems like a long, long waste of time.
But that is me, you may need to spend 10s of hours upgrading.
Death runs can suck, sometimes a fun challenge, other times annoying, but that is with most all survival games. If you have food, spare armor and weapons, then recovering your stuff isn't difficult.
Maybe the Dark Souls part is the couple hits you dead? IDK never played or watched anyone else play. But a lot of games have the "Dark Souls Like" as they claim.
Why not pick up all the bits and rebuild it, you may need an extra bit or two but carry spares.
If you leave the Portals out in the open and unprotected that's your own fault.
I only play solo and have killed all the bosses and done a couple of playthroughs.
I generally miss out Bronze Armour and Iron just mine enough for the tools/weapons and stick to Troll Armour until into Wolf armour.
Didn't even do it on purpose. I used a hoe to raise the level around the swamp as preparation (Against the water/movement). Just kept arrowing and running, until about halfway he just stopped behind a tree. Skeletons did come behind me. I just stayed there and shot him. As a solo player I don't mind little blessings like that.
