What does continuous music actually do?

I see a lot about turning it on but nothing about what it does.

You will hear the in game music all the time, as opposed to only hearing the little tunes that play for morning and night. Oh and sailing music. That's always on no matter the setting in my experience.

Oh ok. I guess I was hoping it would just play it less often so it's not so all or nothing. Oh well.
