I am having problems building <SOLVED>
I have not played that much but at first I was able to build a little, a tool shed and a 4x5 basic house. I am getting back into the game and I cant seem to get anything to work. I level the group, put down just one floor tile, add one wall section, the floor tile is blue. I try to add a 45 degree slanted roof on top of the wall, wall is blue... and the roof and wall just collapse. I try to put a beam down and put another beam on top of it, they collapse. Its like everything that I try to put on top of something collapses, well except I cam attach floor tiles together and I can put one wall around the outside. When I am doing this everything is blue, no yellow or red or anything like that I see in YouTubes on building.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am about to call it quits!

That seems odd. It should not collapse in that configuration, like, ever.
Do you have screenshots?

this is without any mods, right?

if so, my suspicion is you have something floating that worked but trying to branch off it is failing. Does it happen if you move over a few feet?

There is sometimes a delay with the game showing you the structural integrity (blue, green, yellow, red etc)

It could be your bottom piece is not actually touching the ground. I've found it always shows blue when you first place it

Hmm ok I am not a pro at this, dont really use discussion board, another sign of my frustration.

Thanks for the advice folks.. I tried rebuilding several times. I will double triple check that its touching the ground but I cant even really get started. I stripped it all down to just three pieces and it doesnt work :(

Forget the floor tiles. They are sitting on top of the terrain and so they are not supporting anything...
Instead, start by placing your corner vertical poles INTO the ground. That's the start of your support. Add more vertical poles if you wish and then join up those poles with horizontal beams to create a framework.
Once you have a secure frame, you can start placing the roofing support beams to the frame.
When all of your framework is complete, then you may place the pieces that frame will support, such as floor tiles, wall sections and thatched roof tiles.
I wish you success ;)

Don't build on the ground.

It can be tricky, but find da way to planting supports INTO THE GROUND.

Also, like cdog said: there can be a delay to the integrity colour. just give it 2secs to see if it starts changing colour. Also tho, feel free to give it a try if the object would be touching more then just the target: Like a roof to another roof tile, but has supports around insert.

Place floor, place small wall. Now get a support to snap to it and INTO the ground. There are probably other tricks, and it depends how high off the ground you want it. Once you got it figured out finish you grounding/main floor (how large you building will be.

I believe its best to get your frame of the build done before all all out. If its too wide you can do stairs in the center or a cooking area with supports leading to the roof. Stone 2nd floors likely will require iron beams for support, depending.

I believe too high is also an issue, although stone should let you build higher. I don't believe connecting pillars together does anything, just lets things look fancy (but should be if resting things along them).

sry, figured i just drop tips down while im at it.

Thanks for the advice grapplehoeker, I tired and was successful in putting up vertical beams but when I put a cross bean on top, it just collapses... I have been going back and forth between the two methods... When I build a 4x5 house about a month ago.. I just put down floors, walls and roof no problem.. so I am confused why its not working. I cant even make a little 2x1 shed for the workbench, which I did several times when I first played. I guess I shouldn't have taken a break :)

Hey thanks everyone, lots of good ideas and so quickly! I am going to try again after work. I will let you guys know how it works out.

Floor wall roof is a basic config, it should not collapse at all.
I only vert beams as texture or if I got 2 walls up, at 1 wall even if the lot if floating it should stick... I know I use small vert beams to at least keep the building honest if its partially floating.

I dunno, its a odd one.

your break is why I mentioned mods. If you have month+ old ones, they could be causing problems due to updates since. If you keep having trouble try to give us more info. I have never had to build INTO the ground. I do sometimes, but you should not need that for 4x5 wall high home using 1 or 2 high of the 2x2 walls. Higher than that, you can start having roofing woes without a little support but it builds that much without any support at all... something odd is going on..

Maybe the issue is you dont have enough floor ? I usually place the floor, then walls , then roof when I build small outposts.

Ya that is what I thought. I even tore everything down and put in one vertical beam and tried to put another vertical one on top (both short and long) and it collapses every time.. multiple locations. I mean that is just 2 pieces.. feeling a bit cursed. I tried making a new character and creating a new world.. same thing

That is strange, it should work even if the floor piece is not blue (touching ground)

Do you have mods installed?
