I kind of hope their Friday night tradition is to bust out a bottle of whiskey and laugh at the tenacity of some posters here, thinking about how they sold 30X the expected number of units and keeping with their vision; the small group of unhappy, extremely vocal customers be damned.
Pretty much agree with you otherwise. Skeletons are totally generic, but I guess its good to have a familiar monster as an introduction. Their crypts are AWFUL. Draugr are really boring.. I think the entire swamp needs reworking as far as they go and the story they tell, doubly so with the iron-mining mechanic as it is (HORRIBLE). Leeches on the other hand are amazing and terrifying while being totally safe if you arent stupid, but man will they punish the dumb. Swamp mobs could use more interaction with the water/player dynamic. Ambushing, pulling you in, etc...
Havent gotten into the mountains yet. So yeah... but I like to hear that wolves are a deadly threat in packs and you cant go wrong with ice drakes.
The ocean needs more monsters. And ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BIG ones. Even if they are super rare. You should be super happy to have your day REKT by some deep leviathan that eats your entire longboat and all your iron. This needs to be a thing. Transporting metal should scare the piss out of you.
Trolls are awesome (especially when they decide to hit your base with a tree) but could certainly use more variety.
Graydwarves are well designed and don't feel generic (i.e. unlike skeletons). I would like additional common "cannon fodder" enemies like these.
But thematically they seem... lacking. They don't, to me, feel like they are "part" of the Black Forest the way the Greydwarfs are. Hopefully they are just undercooked right now and the devs plan on doing some really fun stuff with them later. It just feels like they have a lot of unrealized potential.
Ocean biome really has a lot of possibilities, but norse mythology wise what is there besides the world serpent (which the sea serpent would be like a sperm sized comparison) and kraken? Nymphs and other sprits? Draugr boat crews? I'm all for them making up some new ♥♥♥♥ to add more fear into shipping stuff. I hate deep natural bodies of water, but would love to have something that really terrifies me.
If mistlands goes spidery that's also pretty generic. Dark woodlands can have all sorts of tree spirit/nymph/dryad type creatures that fit in with the setting.
So far, the enemy diversity is good, especially as it ties into progression. Going from Greylings to Greydwarfs + Brutes + Shamans + up to 2 stars (or maybe more?) The game gradually introduces new enemies: necks, greydwarfs, Skeletons, Trolls, etc.
While some designed are generic, I do enjoy how enemies like Skeletons are very intimidating when you encounter them for the first time. Likewise trolls and the strong Greydwarfs give that same feeling, when your first see them. And, then as you progress and get stronger gear, the once strong enemies become easily managed, thus creating a good feeling of progression.
The swamp has really impressed me. I never thought I would be terrified of a green blob. Surtlings and Wraiths are also great. The water leeches are a nice, lowkey, threat for staying in the water too long, and the Draugr are really fun and terrifying.
Overall, no complaints, when it comes to enemies.
Troll/Lox/Fuling Berserker are pretty much the same thing. I think they are cool to have.
Mountain Golem that you have to kill with the pick is cool too!
I like all the monsters except Draugr, they are boring af in the swamp (cool in the meadows villages though). It's the third biome to visit and there should be more variety.
