Then realize that it takes up an inventory slot in return, trapping you in a nightmarish catch-22
I'm not a huge fan of the current inventory system, mostly agree with OP. I think at the very least separating equipped items would help, but even if nothing changes its not a game-breaker for me.
I'm not saying that current inventory and weight system isn't utterly irrealistic, nor that it doesn't come with its own self-consistency issues, but at least for now, I'd say that it's kind of balanced between limitations and possibilities.
Considering weight alone, a character may carry enough (200+) wood to build and furnish a large wooden shack...
Considering slots alone, well a character can't carry more than, say 30 weapons and shields...
Nonetheless, I hope that vanilla system will be both more immersive and yet practical.
The same is true for chests by the way: how is it possible to store like 10 piles of stone/wood when you need a full 4x3 shack to lay them down on the ground?
Then we can talk about how there's 'not enough space'.
