Weight limit + inventory space limit doesn't make the game any fun
Skyrim got weight limit and it kinda works there because you don't have inventory space limit.

The point of weight limit is to prevent the player from carrying an extremely unrealistic amount of items, and we already got inventory space limit for that and well for the sake of balance i guess.

Minecraft has just inventory space and I've never felt like its unbalanced or that I'm carrying too much more than I should be able, same with Skyrim where I could carry many items but depending on the weight, and I never felt like I could carry too much neither.

Lets hope for backpacks in the vanilla game

And until then, or as alternative, there are some mods

You could always buy a Megingjord from the trader to up your carry weight

Then realize that it takes up an inventory slot in return, trapping you in a nightmarish catch-22

I don't mind the back and forth of farming and storing items. I think it is part of the relaxing charm of the game.

Inv slots are hugely problematic especially when doing swamp crypt runs. Garbage accumulation turns into a process which takes a few seconds every few minutes. Valheim Plus gave us additional inventory slots as well as some other QoL solves.

valheim plus is essential for this game. otherwise 80% of the gameplay is running from A to B, just pathetic play time padding to cater to basement dwelling virgins without jobs

Trouble with V+ is frequent need to re-install every update, compatability issues if you hop servers, and its easy to lose a lot of your stuff.

I'm not a huge fan of the current inventory system, mostly agree with OP. I think at the very least separating equipped items would help, but even if nothing changes its not a game-breaker for me.

I'd rather wer have unlimited inventory slots, but a limited weight, but not both. Basically how Elder scroll/fallout games do it, you have a weight limit, but you can carry any amount of items you want till you hit that limit.

However, a slot limit is one of the solution to get both weight and encumberance considerations.
I'm not saying that current inventory and weight system isn't utterly irrealistic, nor that it doesn't come with its own self-consistency issues, but at least for now, I'd say that it's kind of balanced between limitations and possibilities.

Considering weight alone, a character may carry enough (200+) wood to build and furnish a large wooden shack...
Considering slots alone, well a character can't carry more than, say 30 weapons and shields...

Nonetheless, I hope that vanilla system will be both more immersive and yet practical.
The same is true for chests by the way: how is it possible to store like 10 piles of stone/wood when you need a full 4x3 shack to lay them down on the ground?

First explain where you're holding 34 different items at the same time with a sword/shield in hand, with 300+ lbs worth of logs and stones included.
Then we can talk about how there's 'not enough space'.
