It's RNG. And pretty true to life, too, if simplified. Material veins in the world are not just a giant lump of pure copper, or pure iron, or pure anything. It's the material mixed with an often enormous amount of stone. Mining operations are all about separating the usable copper/iron/silver/etc out from the stone. So, realistically, when mining a copper vein, you'd get a lot of stone, and some copper; in game this is controlled by RNG.

It's pretty amazing that our Viking can manually separate the stone from the good bits of ore. Normally, the whole pile would have to go into the smelter.

Lol im so glad we are playing real life simulator and not, you know, some kind of viking-themed game with lots of heavy abstraction. I can't wait to apply for my mining permits, talk to some contractors, and pay taxes.

The RNG especially blows when you get zero ore several times in a row. Ha ha ha are we having fun, now?

we've been sent to this world by odin and our first pick is made from the antlers of a giant lightning deer

Oh? No real life stuff in our fantastical viking game? Alright, let's take out animal breeding, respawning berries and mushrooms, all forms of farming, boats, the ability to build at all, the ability to make weapons and armor, huntable animals, the stamina bar, the health bar, and we'll just spawn the player in with a shield, an axe and a glorious beard in true viking fashion, but man there's still a lot of other things to remove if we're going this route of no real life stuff, are you sure about this?

But in seriousness, It's just a bit of RNG dude. Even if they made it drop ore 100% of the time, they'd just drop the total drops down to 1 per piece instead of 2-4, and you'd end up with considerably less ore overall. I get that it feels a bit annoying to get some bad luck, But I'm fairly sure you just haven't paid attention to all the times you got strings of success- Because people in general tend to focus in on annoyances rather than happy occurrences.

So incredibly effective is the viking smelter they can produce a copper bar of 12 units of weight, from a pile of ore weighing just 10 units.
Which is just as well, because the viking conversion rate from metal bar to anything else is abysmal.

If you take the time to mine around the copper node to reveal the whole thing, you'll see that most of them are huge and provide enough copper to get through the bronze tier with just 1-2 nodes.

I agree...expose the entire nugget before you start and you'll not be surprised as you break it up and find 'veins' of copper amongst the stone...and you'll get nearly the entire node. Some of mine are semi under water and you have to give up at a certain point...Copper is not a rare resource item in this game, or at least my seed. So much Copper for the taking...and you only need a few entire nodes worth to make a full tool set. I think I've done 4 entire Copper Nodes and not needed much more.

I think I spend much more time digging trenches/moats...lol.

...what should happen is take the amounts of swings down to 1, to get your return or not...that would take a bit of the grind off, I guess. Or, is that how it works when you get to Pickaxe Skill=100...perhaps? One swings brings the payout?!?

Never been mining before have you? Separating stone from ore is a painful task.

all im tryna say is it life would be so much more chill if i could just get myself a sulfur every hit uno. its literally a QoL change. stop over exaggerating like a child

Later in game, you really really appreciate all that stone...

when i played solo i struggled with getting sulfur because of the rng, but when youre in a group its a lot easier when everyones mining. Idk why people would complain about the rng being removed. It shouldnt negatively effect anyone, some people wont care and some people will be greatful but surely no one would dislike this change?
Wyrlish Mar 25, 2021 @ 3:22pm
Trust me, when you're making big ol' stone harbor bases you'll appreciate having all that stone.
