Valheim
eating simulator
anyone else think devs focus a little too much on food and cooking in these kinds of games?
I mean bruh spend more time eating then anything else lol -imagine if you had to eat this much irl.

you'd be so full that you couldn't move.
I demand an outhouse if I am supposed to eat this much.

you know just because every bushcraft video on youtube is some guy cooking bacon or steak over a fire..

You clearly never played a survival game before. It is OK just avoid this genre in the future.
This game actually has very casual food mechanics for a survival game. Food gives you buffs, you can't starve to death, you don't need to drink water, you don't need to eat every 5 RL minutes.

I view food in Valheim as a replacement for character level mechanics in other games more than a survival thing. You still need to eat though, even in your base. There's no lawyers to call in Valheim if you suffer a slip-and-fall injury.

To everyone that says you gotta eat too often. Learn 2 play. Processed food recipes last for 25-30 minutes, thats a full game day. Dont eat berries and mushrooms.
Mid tier food is cheap and easy to make and last long enough to do what ever you want. Sausages, carrot soup and turnip stew is the way I go doing what ever tasks I need to do. I survive all the say to mountains easily with those. When I go roaming the plains, then it's fish wrap, blood pudding and lox pie time.
The eating mechanic doesn't match the health mechanic, why would I eat, have 190 hp, go to sleep then have 185 hp, walk around my house and I am at 180 hp, put some wood and resin on fire pits and sconces, jump down off my wall, I'm at 140 hp, but I can't eat yet. That makes no sense. I watched my char today and I was losing 1hp about every 6-7 seconds in my base in the meadows, in my house.
The health and stamina buffs from food wear off. Slowly at first, then rapidly when the buff starts flashing slowly. When the buff is blinking like this you can eat the same kind of food again to refresh it. When the buff is solid color the game won't let you eat any more of the same kind of food.

Also, look at the food durations as another poster said. Cooked food in general lasts twice (or more) as long as raw food and has way more stats.

When its blinking that means that now you can eat any type of food to fill in that spot, except the ones you already have.

Anyone caught eating my wheat food while hanging out indoors in our mead hall will be banned from the server. Just saying.
IMO the food fits well with its availability for each zone , and potential rested bonus items as you skill up for each zone as you progress through the Forsaken.

By “end game” the available food timing/up meshes well with the zones you are in.

Of course, you won’t need blood pudding or similar when in the meadows or Black Forest , while you can’t expect to survive living off honey and roasted deer or berries while in the plains.

Changing day /night times would require reworking both food and rested buffs, so not seeing that being changed anytime soon unless they can somehow scale them to match “time zones”, which I assume would be a challenge if not impossible to do.

As for requiring food in a survival game? Be glad they don’t have a starvation / death from no food.

It is a lot of food. If we are to eat this much some tweaking to food output when cooking would be nice. For instance soups.....you should be creating 10 at a time not 1.......using 3 or 4 turnips/carrots. Something like this.

Batch cooking would be very helpful.

Currently cooking is just clicking buttons. This is fine. This is no problem. Its not great game play though and it sucks to have it belabored. If it is to remain simple, necessary, but not enjoyable then it should be dealt with in batches and waste less time.

If you want me to sit here cooking for hours please make it not just button clicking.
Well, the first big update down the roadmap is called "Hearth & Home", which will focus on base management, and everything related to home, build, craft, farm, cook and so on.

If I take what's Iron Gate deliver to us with their initial early launch of the game, I am totally confident that it will be awesome and we will see many great improvement in everything that involve cooking.

No. With most foods you need to eat twice a day, which is totally realistic. With a couple of exceptions none of the food types are hard to get, and with a little thought and planning you can spend one day and have enough food prepared to last you a couple of weeks. It's not an issue, and the only change it could use is more recipes/food variety.
I really like the different spin on food we get here. You could be fine eating nothing, but then you might trip over a log and die. Or you could fill up on Serpent stew, fish wraps etc and run around the plains whacking bugs and anklebiters for a day.

Yes compared to other survival games, this is refreshing.
The early game foods don't last long so you're constantly smoshing handfuls of berries and mushrooms into your eating hole every few seconds. When you get to mid-to-late game, the foods last for much, if not most, of the day.

As another guy said, lox pie, blood pudding etc. is for plains. for all other biomes you dont need the good stuff. for building and doing nothing in the base i use food i can produce simply IN the base. that turnip stew, bread and honey or perhaps carrot soup (still need mushrooms)
