First base size
How Many floors you think I would need for a first base?

To explain myself better I Will say an example: In my opinion 7x10 floors is bigger than I would like to build but I wanna know how Big are your bases :D

my starter base is usually only 5x9, plus front and rear entrances that are both 3x3 extensions. but, i tend to have semi circles on the long sides of the main building where all my work stations and storage are.

edit: heres a screenshot for a better reference. the main building is only 5x9 remember

Just build what you need for the moment, you can always expand. You'll probably find better areas later anyway, closer to biomes that have the resources you need etc.

Some people end up with a massive central base, others have outposts all over the map, or even a bit of both. By the end you'll have severl various crafting stations, forges, kilns etc so just try to leave yourself enough room to grow.

Bigger than that. In addition to crafting stations, furniture and portals, you'll need about 40 storage chests (not entirely kidding).

Let’s be clear about what you are asking; a first base is anyplace you can be comfortable and explore out of with plenty of food nearby. A first “serious” base is someplace the folks above have described. No need to build a serious base until you do some exploring because you will likely find some very nice locations after you look around a bit. Don’t think the first spot you find will be the best. It’s a big map.

My first base was a 5x7 with a fire set up in the center and was a full and a half wall in height. When starting out don't worry about making a base big enough to fit everything. You can add on to fully change your base later. Heck my 5x7 has transformed several times and now has a foot print of 13x9ish with 2 floors giver take its not a square box. Plus its bigger than I need with all the end game fully upgraded stuff. But I wanted to decorate.

5x5 at least

You can fit a campfire with smoke redirection (or destruction if you know how the game actually handles smoke), some spits ("cooking stations"), a bed for a spawn point, a workbench and a chest or two in a 3x2 hut, but I wouldn't advise it as it's super cramped and the camera gets messed up in that configuration, just like when you're trying to explore spawned tiny buildings.

I recommend something similar to Insanity Checks configuration. The wall-and-a-half design gives you more headroom and space for the camera and keeping it simple means you're not wasting materials and time building something in a location you may never want to go back to once you've progressed to higher tiers of materials and better configurations for comfort/rested stats, storage, portals to get around faster, a large workshop and kitchen and so on.

Well I am going to touch on something others have failed to hit on. If you are new to the game then your first base needs to be small. Why? Because unlike other games the roof and it's support can be tricky if you go to large. Then you Rage Quit because it keeps collapsing or you are watching YT for 2hrs and not experiencing the game. This was my personal experience and I have (son's account) all kinds of survival games from 7 Days to Die to Space Engineers. I love survival games and base defense. This is the first one I have played where you can not throw flat pieces up top for a roof. Your house looks like a house. Had to tap into the limited building knowledge I gained as a kid working with my dad.
Now once you get that down pat or if you are a nature building (see screenshot of first response) go as large as you want. Note there are base attacks in this game and you must be ready. Even the big trolls come a knocking. Do not fear though with good planning they will not get far. Once you kill 3 they start getting stupid easy to kill.

Anyhow I hope this helps OP and anyone serious about the question. Natural builders like my buddy can even struggle. Though he struggled for hours where it took me a day.

i made a 5x7 house with a 2x3 extention fresh out of world spawn, for my "starter spot"

within a day or two after, i hopped across a small river and over a low hill, and here sits an half build almost fully functional deserted village...

next step was... palisade wall surrounds my starter town ;o)

3x4 easily fits: Crafting table. bed, fire pit & spits, chopping block, tanning rack & some chests You're going to move so less is more.

i was tempted in doing this for a main base until i started getting raided. lol
those trolls are brutal in early game.

where are you at in the game?
Really you should be moving about your bases.

My very first base was a little hovel with enough space for a fire place, a bed, and some sotrage. I wouldn't worry about having anything bigger until you've killed the first boss. when you kill the first boss I'd advise digging a moat and then setting up shop.
Sumppi Apr 6, 2021 @ 11:59pm
My first base was a simple two story building with a deep moat as soon as i got my first pickaxe from the first boss. Eventually ditched that base once i started looking for iron and needed a bigger one. It doesn't really matter much what you build as long as it suits your needs since you can just disassemble parts of it to build a new base elsewhere if you feel like it.

Second base was a draugr village. felt like a large place initially but eventually felt like i should have made a bigger base. Been building around it ever since
