So I've built this canal to ...
...not have to go around this huge island everytime I need iron.

But... the game doesn't let me dig any deeper. Meaning I can't get below the water level and all this hard work and countless hours went to sh!t.
Devs, pleaseeee do something!

lower the terrain on either side of the canal and you should be able to make it below water level.

Thanks for the help, but I was hoping to avoid this. Guess there's no way around it?

For future reference, you can dig down 16 times from the point of origin. Just like you can raise the ground 16 times from the point of origin.

So when doing a project like this, it's better to start at a lowpoint XD

Yea your cliffs are too high, meaning you cant lower the ground any more unless you cut back the cliffs a bit.

Normally, you can mine out ground underwater enough to let even a long boat pass through. It's tricky though - you will float until your tippy toes land on ground and allow you to stand, then you can mine the ground. If you can stand, you can mine. If you can't find a place to stand, the water is deep enough for a longboat.

Well I started at sea level but the terrain went up. ;)

Awesome more hours of digging. -.-

Well... Now is the time to decide to keep going or cut your losses and move on. I've definitely seen a number of people invest a ton of time into projects that didn't work out in the end. Either way, GL

Isn't it faster with the pickaxe? The hoe doesn't do much to the height of the terrain, right?

this looks like a cart path would have been a better answer... can you let us know if you manage to dig it out deep enough? If you can't, I think it would be a tiny effort to fill it back in enough for the cart using the hoe and pickaxe

There is a fixed amount of heigh you can raise and lower every Singular m²

No way to do that without a mod.
And be aware the mod that remove this restriction is one of these that break if you play the map on vanilla (without this mod)
Means your 20m deeper terrain will reset to the Vanilla possible 8-10 meter

What's this mod called and where can I find it?

https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/359

you will need Bepinex, that is the ... modloader
I suggest to install Valheim+ it comes together with bepinex and adds a ton of options
https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/4

No idea where bepinex is available alone

And again as really serious tip, dont use this mod to make High in the Sky bases.
If the mod breaks with a update and you load your game not aware of that your base will be destroyed.

+/- 8 meters from the original height. It's to keep performance from going potato and allows each 1x1 m square to be a single data point.
