Row Row Row your boat
There has got to be something I'm missing. I'm on the Elder but his spawn point is half way across the globe. No problem, I figure I will sail there and place a portal. Yeah the wind is brutal. I get we want a realistic game but come on. When you are against the wind you end up just sitting there for 10 or 15 minutes. I finally get attacked by a sea monster and have to turn into the wind and head home to outrun him. There has got to be a way to craft a damn oar to counteract this boring part of the game.

All boats in fact come with an oar. Bring the speed down to +1 to use the oar instead of the sails. I agree though, I wish that with larger boats, our passengers would be able to increase the row speed.

Yeah, the single arrow speed completely furls the sails and uses the rudder to paddle forward. Sometimes you just get unlucky with the wind.

Gently down the stream!

There must be land between you and the Elder that you can stop and make a safe base / camp, any part of the Black Forest will do, set a portal at this base / camp and destroy your ship in the shallows so you can get your resources back and keep them in a safe place. When you are ready to push on just rebuild your boat, eventually you will have made enough camp / bases along your route to make your last journey to the Elder short.

If there is no wind or the wind is against you then just turn your boat and row (there will be an oar icon above the wind map), at least you will be moving.

Works great in this game.
Yes, once I figured out how to beat the wind, sailing became one of my favorite things to do. I never sailed IRL so this game became my first experience with Tacking.

One chevron is your paddle, you can use that even if the wind is against you. The rowing animation isn't obvious at all so a lot of people miss it.

Thank you, I didn't know that. That is a huge help. I was just sitting there stranded in the water.

I ended up running as far as i could on land then building a raft and kept repeating that until i got to the elder. Portal is up and running now.

Yes, this. It's actually incredibly realistic for a game with so little realism.

Also: I have never seen a map that didn't have at least two Elder spawn altars. If there isn't one somewhere on your starting island, there will almost always be one within 2 islands of it. I would even go so far as to say 100%, at least until someone can prove to me otherwise.

Sailors IRL have it easy in this game, the mechanics are actually fairly realistic and fun.
