armor value and end game gear
Hey.

finally im there, I have a padded armor level 3. though it doesnt make a noticeable difference compared to my previous level 2 wolf armor once in the plains.
does anyone know a little bit about how armor protection works in Valheim?

also, there isnt a spear at the black metal era? thats the weapon I have the highest skill with :(

Always thought it was a simple damage reduction stat. 50 armor = 50 less damage. Maybe I'm wrong.

EDIT :
Found this on Valheim Wiki:
Someone did some extensive testing of armor (although ideally someone would dig up the true formula in code) :

So roughly, for physical attacks (elemental attacks seems to behave differently) :

If your armor is less than half of the incoming damage, your armor is used as a flat reduction.

Else you have to use that formula:

finalDamage = damage² / (4 * armor)

full set of t4 padded, including the hat, should reduce basic furlings to trivial pests level. By now the squitos should also be trivial for you, even if they get a hit (they should not often) it won't hurt much. A lot of people forget the hat... that is a lot of armor to take off for a lamp or whatever.

well at T3 its like my wolf level 2 almost. deathsquitos were never an issue, easy to block and kill.
fulings seems to still hurt. a 1* fuling will take almost 50% of my health if I eat mid game food only (turnip stew + saussage + carrot soup). meaning 60-70dmg. even the deathsquio seem to not really hurt less
I mean, i'm not complaining that plains are harder, they def should be, but they are manageable for sure, but how little I feel the difference between lvl2 wolf and lvl3 padded.

ill run some calculations based on FrenchBastards findings to see more clearly whats up with that.

Your defence stat will mitigate damage at a flat value below 50, then becoming a diminishing percentage as you go higher. Not that I want hyper-realism but I think the curve in enemy damage and gear effectiveness is a little extreme. Like the highest threat of a previous biome is only roughly similar to the lesser threats of the next biome, and completely falling out of relevance if you gear much further.

With boss items gating progression to essential materials there's enough reason to not spend too much time in later biomes without impending insta-death, and plenty of reason to go back to places where the local creatures amount to nothing more than ankle-biting pests which can just be ignored.
Like a giant lumbering red mofo who lifts a tree trunk with one hand is no comparison next to a little red dude who chucks spikes on twigs. Even though a 2-star fuling has about double the attack power of a 2-star troll, the actual output after defence calculations (upgraded padded set) is far greater than double damage.

Right now I'm hoping the massive stat jumps are just a placeholder until we get some improved enemy behaviour later, as currently it primarily aids with compensating for their cheeseability.
If the enemy could constantly keep their front pointed your way, block you with their shields, backstep, use more kinds of attacks, or hold their ground better when using ranged attacks, then it would probably be a bit much.
