How do I get my items back when dying at sea?

I went on my first voyage not aware that there was going to be a serpent. He trashed my raft but luckily I got close to land before dying. When I get back to get my items I can't seem to pick them up, like they're not there
Do I really lose all my items when I die in water?

Your tombstone floats, and should still be where you died.

And as you now learned... Rafts are dangerous in open ocean! If/when you get your stuff back, I strongly recommend building a bigger boat... (doable after beating the first boss.)

No skull on the map ? and when you go to the skull no tombstone ? did you die again before or something ? only time I heard of losing items at sea is when you fall off the #FLATEARTH....j/k the edge of the 10th world ?

I see the skull and I'm standing right on top of it. When I died I saw my sinking gravestone so I don't know why it's not there now. It was right on the shore

sorry my dude, never seen this happen to me or my friends. once I lost my stuff in a mud puddle in the Swamp.

Ether rebuild or I am sure there are console command guides so you can just respawn lost gear

Alright, I figures out how to enable debug mode. I flied to were I died and my gravestone was underwater on the shoreline which is probably why I could not get it
