Terraria?
"Summon and defeat vengeful primordial bosses of myth and legend, and collect trophies to progress and craft new powerful items"

This sounds like Terr's gameplay loop. Is that the case? Gear up->boss->gear up-> boss? I enjoy that loop so I'm curious.

What reminds me most on terraria in this case is the neverendingand incredibly annoying stream of dwarfes that you have to kill, in terraria it´s the slimes who constantly attack you.

was it minecraft that inspired terraria?

just saying, they aren't even close if you compare gameplay loops and mechanics. Terraria is rather restricting regarding progression (very similar to Valheim), the crafting system is very much different (again very similar to Valheim) and the Boss battles/preparations aren't even comparable at all (again very similar to Valheim), food/potions buffs stats and are absolutely not required to survive (unlike Minecraft where you need to eat regularly to keep your hunger at bay) ... theres nothing about Valheim that could be compared to Minecraft.

the only other game i've seen the devs reference for an inspiration is Dark Souls regarding combat mechanics. so there it is folks, Valheim is inspired by Terraria and Dark Souls ... just forget minecraft and conan exiles as they are nothing like Valheim.

the exploration/dungeon part also reminds me of portal knights.

if you give it a decent playthrough (don't even have to finish off the first "world state" to see the similarities) ... the main gameplay loop in Terraria is the preparation for the next Boss Battle/Biome.

Think Minecrafts inspiration was a game called Infiniminer, not Half Life. :P
As for Terraria, who knows? I remember them though when Red was workin with Blue, and I dont remember anything much being talked about Minecraft then either, though lots of fans from both forums like to liken the games to different versions of each other.

you are correct, Notch had referenced using Infiniminer as inspiration (actually said he stole a few ideas but you know lol) quite a lot of times during various interviews and reviews of Minecraft.
