I remove them to prevent having to trip over them or get stuck on one if I ever have to pass that way again.

If you just look for mats and want to get as much as possible then ignore stumps they take way to much on the durability of your tools.
If you planted some, most will grow. if too close, a few may not. You will get more seeds than you need anyway, most likely. Ive taken to just clearing the plains of birch -- I have an item stand addiction ...
2. Supposedly they reduce lag via reducing the number of instances. (citation needed.)

5. Just angle your swings so you're hitting the stump at the same time as the log that fell off it, and it takes no extra time.
