Monster despawn after portaling away

Hi Community,

How long do mobs stick around after you portal away? I left a boat on the shore one time and it lasted for a really long time, but when I returned, there was a troll just starting to bang away at it. I can't imagine the game was simulating the troll before I arrived at the scene.

If I portal away, is my portal basically safe as long as I don't return there?

you can lose a portal to high damage enemy if they attack it. This can happen if they are chasing you and you go thru it, or you are near to it and they run across it, etc.
its rare, and they don't seem to do it if you were not near the portal one way or another, but even so its in your best interest to hide them a bit or make them a bit harder to get to. I put many of mine up on hard to climb rocks or out of reach offshore etc.

i would give it 50/50 odds of survival if a troll were beating it and you took the portal and left the troll behind. They keep going for a few seconds after you leave the zone.

Out of reach offshore--that's an interesting aspect. I'll have to take a closer look into that. Thanks!!
