I cannot dig out some ground
I started digging around, and i cannot dug out the ground for some reason. The runestones and standing stones arent nearby, its just an empty field. Its not because the ground would be too low because i could go lower a few meters away

terrain depth in this game is a bit wonky...it is based on the depth of the original terrain you're digging. a few meters away the starting height of the terrain would have been lower to start with, hence you being able to dig to a lower overall depth.

So, there's no way for me to dig past this bump?

Thats ♥♥♥♥♥♥ dumb.

This is literally a flat world, why do that?! Have a damn 0 Y coordinate!......

I have this problem as well

The terrain isn't voxel generated, it's height-mapped. If it were voxels then terraforming would be even laggier :/
Height mapping is basically the technology behind Doom. Not Doom 2016; Doom 1994

It is what it is , decisions had to be made so one guy could make this game by himself over the course of 3 years. Work around it, you were not put upon this earth to have each of your specific whimsy fulfilled, sadly.

"decisions had to be made so one guy could make this game by himself over the course of 3 years"

....that is simply not a true statement. There is more than a single developer working on this project. Another poster was explaining the difference in the technology of the systems.

...you are gonna git really tired before v1.0...trying to 'beat back' simple observations on the project/product.

Do some research

You can use the Pick ax to remove rocks undrground in that area then level it

Exactly. It didn't start with a huge team, it still doesn't have a huge team. A quick search will find many articles, including one on IGN where I got this quote:

Svensson began development in late 2018, and Törnqvist joined in mid-2019. By 2020, the two had expanded their team to five and struck a deal with their publisher, Coffee Stain. The indie publisher, though young, has a history of strong success with co-op focused games, such as sci-fi factory simulator Satisfactory and procedural underground mining FPS Deep Rock Galactic, each of which have over 40,000 user reviews averaging out to ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ on Steam.

As for the OP - if you can't dig down, build up. Don't want to do that? Adapt your building to the terrain and save yourself the headache of trying to get things level. I've done that and I find building much more enjoyable now.

Couldn't the developers use an hybrid approach? Store as an heightmap for 95%+ of uses, but when terraforming more than say 8 tiles, switch to a more elaborate height system.

Not without major changes and a lot of work.

As I understand it Iron Gate are a small team of developers, of which only one is a full time *programmer* who built and maintains these core game mechanics.

There's a maximum dig depth so once you get to a certain point you can't dig anymore. From what I understand it's got nothing to do with how low any nearby terrain is. I think you can only dig down a certain distance from where that particular spot was when you started digging.
