1. You don't have to get more resources for an iron weapon - just make an axe. Wood is always required, so you're saving yourself some time on both iron weapon and faster chopping.
2. Karve really is smaller, so it is easier to pass through narrow rivers and rocky enbankments. Maybe it isn't faster than a longboat, but it is more controllable in that sense. I suspect you're saying "every word" just for drama.
3. I'm not fighting you over "iron axe is the best weapon". All I'm saying is that you don't have to get more resources to get both a decent weapon and an upgraded wood chopping axe. Both are useful, for basically half a cost. If you're limited on iron/don't feel like grinding - get an axe.
Hmm... yeah, this is not the way I go at all. Longship is a must for three reasons - speed, storage, and safety (highest HP). That slight turn radius/speed bonus is nice with the karve, but that's the only thing it's really good for. I have yet to see any stream/river that's worth sailing a karve into, I can just park my longboat and run along the riverbank to see what's up there far easier than taking a boat in there - especially since you can't tack so will be at the mercy of the wind or could get stuck.
I think that iron is better spent on a mace, and a shield before an axe. It comes down to play style and preference, I guess. Faster chopping is nice, sure, but faster killing is better in my opinion and the axe isn't the best iron weapon for the swamp which is where the OP might be for a while since they're just starting to get iron. The iron mace makes the swamp enemies a lot easier, and I'd even say trivial in some cases. I one shot the no star leeches with one power attack, and it absolutely wrecks skeletons and the blobs, and it also works fine on everything else in the swamp.
You can't fight over the iron axe being the best weapon, it's not and we all know it. it's good, but definitely not the best.
I've found that digging those up is a pain. I usually get about half, maybe a bit more than half, before it gets annoying and I stop. The drop rate can be pretty bad, too. Yeah, it's one way to get iron, but it's not the most efficient. Some enemies will occasionally drop iron, too, but it's always a small amount and the drop rate is fairly low.
Make a portal, go back home, repair and get back. Takes 30 seconds tops.
