Used it after getting killed in the plains when I was not strong enough to be there or get my stuff back.
Seriously though, the black forest is nothing to be worried about really, upgrade your gear, use your bow, and don't be afraid to run. The troll is easily outran, if you eat food.
After getting tired of running back to the meadows every time it started to get dark, I carried some wood and food, and quickly built a small shelter before nightfall. "Immediately" threw down a few walls to stay safe, then a fireplace. Some of the monsters may see you and try to attack but as long as you've got 4 walls up, you're safe and the most they can do is attack the walls and you can easily repair. (As long as it's not a troll, but let's ignore that for now). Eventually you'll build your roof and they wouldn't be able to see you or even know you're there.
Having a safe haven in the middle of the Black Forest to retreat to was very helpful to getting used to it. No more scary Black Forest.
You need to enable them through Steam, it’s disabled by default. Once enabled hit F5, type devcommands, you will get a warning to be careful, then type ghost. Lower case. I forget how to enable through Steam, google it, pretty easy.
Had the same feeling towards the black forest at the beginning of venturing in there, but there is real payoff coming from that uncomfortable feeling once you advance.
When you have better gear, food and skills the black forest becomes a real nice place,
instead of the dreadful deathtrap it is for a time. Then you eventually yearn for it when
you have to spend much time in those horrible, awful swamps.
Setting moods is a strenght of this game.
Also also what fook said: better armor/food/weapons=less stress.
Oh wow they censored f. o. o. k.
The higher your ability to fight back the less scary this world is.
Also find someone else to play together.
If Valheim is that terrible, what would you think of The Forest :)
But here goes:
I suspect we have all been there when we first started. Born naked find wood , then stone etc.,
make an axe as early as you can it doubles as a weapon and a means of getting extra wood from chopping down trees.
Stick to the beech trees initially as your source of wood.
Build four walls and basic shelter.
collect some stones so you can build a fire to go with your shelter
give the fire some cover as well as ventilation
make a bed. collect / kill sources of food (eat regularly)
stick to the meadows, level up, improve weapons and armour.
once you have done this for a while you will have the experience , the skills, the weapons and the armour to venture into the black forest
You defeat the first boss before you you can create a pick-axe and mine ore
read some of the how to guides .
once you play for while, you will probably end up like a lot of us " totally addicted"
Max out as in upgrade them, you will need as lot of leather and Flint to do this, because you will need to make extra crafting upgrades like the tanning rack etc
