How to store the boat?
The tier 2 boat, not the pos raft.

Can i just leave it in the ocean on the coast and have it stay there during a storm? Even while i teleport across the map and back with portals

Or should i terraform a little cove and walk it off?

it slowly wears off, so i recommend you to take the boat to the shore, and axe it down. if the water's too deep nails are gonna sink btw

wait i can just smash it up and then rebuild it?

I kind of assumed that the game was more harsh than that.

As long as its not overly shallow water its fine. Also if the chunk its in isn't loaded from a player being near nothing can happen to it as an area not loaded is paused till a player gets near (aside from stuff on timers).
Waves only move the boat up and down, not side to side.
You can also take it to shallow water and axe it down to its parts.

Once you are established build a stone dock so the waves wont take it out to sea. but yes until then it will not float away but it will take storm damage and can be destroyed by monsters.

Yup, just smash it up close to shore so you can recover all the crafting materials and put them in a box. Make new boat when ready to sail again. I do this often although I also have two slips for boats when I am just dumping ore and leaving soon.

Store boats in a Chest, and label the chest "Boat Chest".
Your welcome.

This is correct.

The boat does not move (besides up and down) when no one is on the boat. You can even stand out of the boat and interact with the storage and the "full physics" of the water will not take place. It will not float away.

In bigger storms, the boat may hit bottom or rocks beneath it that can cause damage. Overall, I don't think I've ever had a boat destroyed from just sitting there. If anything, I've had boats destroyed because I didn't clear the area and some enemy came by and just whacked on it. So now I always build a wall around the boat when I want long term storage. I've never had a boat destroyed that was walled off.

Sure, you can destroy it and save the resources. Or you can have a cool looking boat sitting in a cool looking dock.

Leave the long boar just off shore will be fine, craft a work bench nearby Or craft a simple dock for starters and upgrade as you advance to stone. Example of mine simple stuff

edited to add the front view of the docks if anyone wishes to try it.
Cheers

I usually build excessive, but that is very nice.

However you still have to be careful. Mobs will attack the chest and break it. Then the items on the ground are subject to despawn if there is no nearby workbench.

My advice is to bury a workbench near the chest. That way you will not lose the workbench or the items if mobs break the chest.

If the boat is sufficiently far from shore, it will be safe. I don't like the idea of storing a boat in the chest. I like the challenge of finding a way to dock a boat and make it safe.
The advice I gave applies whether it is in a chest or on shore.
Please do not try to discredit my advice if you do not understand it.

I have lost boats after mobs destroyed the nearby workbench. Since the workbench was gone then items were subject to normal despawn rules rather than no despawn within a workbench area. Hence why I said to bury the workbench.

I dunno why but this made me think of Viva la Dirt League's Horse Pocket. :D

Hold on i can label chests?
loppantorkel Aug 21, 2021 @ 11:31pm
You can make signs and label them. If that's what he meant.

It's usually no issues leaving a ship where it is for a while, at least not if you've built a nearby portal and a workbench. Although, I tend to leave it at a place I feel is fairly secure and mark it on the map.

That said - I have lost a longship that was harboured near my base. It drifted out for some reason, had tipped over and was taking damage. I managed to repair it once from the edge of the pier, but I drowned trying to right the ship and it was lost.

I suspect the ship got stuck in the building pieces at the harbour during a storm and glitched out, so probably a one time thing.
